You're thought process is partially on the right track Paul. I am sure John will build you a great guitar no matter what elements you choose. I will say, IMO, that laminted sides do not contribute much to the tone of the guitar. The double sides may be considered a structural element, much as one would view the laminated rim, on a drum. The rim supports and isolates the top and back.
