Not always necessary -
if your rig is pumping out enough fundamental; my Gibson SG bass is set up with LaBella 49-109 flats - the way it was done back in the mid-60's (I'm thinking of getting a "Jamerson" 52-110 set custom-made in short scale) - running through either a Randall RB-120 1x15" or Ampeg Portabass 250 1x12". I have an '02 Ibanez SR-405 5-string, and since I bought the SG in late '07 I find I really don't need it all that much; there's plenty of low-end support even in the middle register, the low E can bring the floor up about two feet when I really lay into it - and the compact size makes it a whole lot easier on both the shoulder and the fingers to boot...
