I'm putting together a parts Tele and bought a variety of caps; haven't decided which to go with yet. Those paper in oil caps are huge! I know some say cap type doesn't make a tonal difference, but it's a relatively cheap experiment ...
Shielding made a big difference on my MIJ Strat. It really cut the "hum" down quite a bit. I know there are wonderful copper foils out there for just that purpose. But, I just used aluminum foil and a simple glue stick, making sure that everything over-lapped and leaving tabs for several of the pickguard screws to poke through. I also tied in the grounds as well.

I tested it with my meter and everything checked out just fine. Well worth the time and the little material cost involved.
