Don't forget that a shorter scale length will also take some tension away for you.
Then there's also the "tune down half a step and capo the first fret" which essentially creates a shortscale guitar. Heck, if you get a shortscale guitar AND tune it down and capo it...AND use silk and steel or silk and bronze light gauge strings...that thing will play ITSELF!!

Oh and if you don't play with other people a lot, tune down half a step and forget about the capo..heck, tune down a WHOLE step if you want or have to.

So yeah, there are many ways to skin a cat and to reduce string tension. The brand and/or composition of the strings are just one piece of all the things you can do to reduce string tension.
