If there is to be no conversation, I would just as soon eat alone. That is something that I would rather not do. I am a people person, and connecting over a meal is far more important than what is on my plate. In one extreme case, a friend and I enjoyed a meal so much that for over two hours neither of us ever touched our food. I married that girl! (Yes, we finally did eat, but still, the food was a distant second place priority.)
