Sometimes you can find a Gibson electric in this budget but it'seems rare. I recently bought a 1999 Gibson LP Special for $500.
Also check out Epiphone and Peerless. Eastman also makes several Gibson clones. I found an Eastman 335 clone in a store yesterday for $500 used.
