I've owned the MXL 990 in the past and, frankly, I wasn't impressed with it.
I regularly use a pair of their small diaphragm 603s model for acoustic guitar and have been happy with the results, and have a 15 year old 2001P (large diaphragm) that I like to use when I need to warm up vocals. The 990 just didn't fit for me on vocal or instrumental work.
