It seems Martin is moving to Schaler open backs on style 28 and 40s. Awesome, I have those on my OM/PW. They are smooth and not as stiff as new Waverlies can sometimes be.

Similar reaction from me. Although, it’s mostly a feel thing and shape. For instance, I don’t mind the heavy Gotoh 510s. But, I never cared for Rotomatics. I like Grover open backs 18:1. Schaller open backs are great. I have them on some of my guitars. They are a step above Grover 18:1 and on par with Waverly. In all fairness, most of the better open back tuners are roughly equivalent. There aren’t that many variables.
