Taylor Baby: Best size strings

Looking over the various posts on string size for the Taylor Baby, it appears that Elixir Nanoweb light 80/20, .053 E to .02 E is the string of choice.

I recently went to a Taylor dealer who installed Custom Light Elixir Polyweb, . 011 to .052 strings.

The dealer told me that these were the proper strings for the Baby.

I wouldn't mind getting a little more volume and I suppose that is basically the reason I'm enquiring.

Would you care to comment on my best choice of string for the Baby? John.

I don't own one, but looking on Taylor's web site, the baby is strung with Elixir Nanoweb 80/20 Lights. Here's the link...look under Show Complete Specs. :)

According to:
http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/PriceList_2011.pdf (page 10)
Baby:
ElixirŪ NANOWEBŪ Light Gauge
(.012-.053)

btw, this is what I use and I have been very satisfied.

Polyweb's have a thicker coating and seem to damp down on the brightness a fair bit, so this may affect volume. I think the nanoweb light's are better on the baby.

I also tried mediums on the baby once but it didn't really sound right, nanoweb lights seem to make the guitar ring best. I think the general view is that these strings along with a low action minimise intonation issues on the guitar. Medium strings also can be too much for the neck over time.

Thank you for responding to my question . . . it hadn't occurred to me that Taylor might have the specs published . . . next time around for string change I will install lights, .053 to .012 . . . John

I use Martin SP light-mediums (.0125-.055) with excellent results, most notably improved intonation and reduced tendency for normal finger pressure to bend strings sharp. This gives me the benefits of going heavier without going up to mediums, which could do some damage. Taylor might still refuse warranty work on my Baby-M, but it's been three or four years now and the guitar shows no signs of impending damage.

Thank you Chris (cpmusic) for the tip. Wouldn't be surprized if I gave that a try between now and Christmas . . . John

On my Baby T, I used to use Elixir nano PBs in light guage. The PBs offer a fuller tone with more bass than the 80/20s, which is pretty important given its diminutive body size. But recently, on a lark, I tried Elixir's medium-light PBs (what I normally use on my full-bod Taylors), and really like the difference. The enhanced bottom really helps, but the light treb strings still feel "normal" for bends and playing up the neck.

BTW, the factory does not recommend using mediums on the Baby for structural reasons; I asked. But I'm rolling dice with the med/lights as a compromise in string tension. And so far, so good.
