Thank you for posting this lovely rendition of a great song Glenn.
The first time I heard this song was at a small club in Chicago, winter of 1976. I think the performers name was Ashley Abrhamson. Brought back so many wonderful memories. Thank you. |

Hi Glenn,
Stellar job on one of my favorite tunes. I saw McTell play this in London a few years back, and the whole Palladium crowd sang along. It’s one of my favorite concert memories; I’d gone to see Steeleye Span’s Christmas show, and had no idea they had Ralph hidden backstage for a truly special guest appearance. I play this one, too—and it’s also because an old friend brought it to me. Cheers Jimmy |
Hi Glenn
I think your accent is fine with the song too and I enjoyed listening to it :) This song was a big hit here in 1974 reaching No2 in the 'pop' charts including over the Xmas period (No 6 at Xmas) and has remained very popular indeed hence all of the audience singing along with it. He made many appearances on TV as well singing this. |

Interesting about this song becoming a hit in 1974 in the UK. I don't think I knew that. So this explains a lot about why so many people can sing along on the chorus with Ralph McTell -- that whole scene of people totally absorbed in this song and singing along, it's so amazing to watch! I think it really does show that music reaches some place inside us in a way that breaks down barriers. We might all be fighting about politics, but bring us all together for a song like this, and then everyone who dives in to sing can experience this same transcendent moment. Thanks so much for your comments, Phil! :) - Glenn |
Glenn, great job on that song. As a boy, every summer, I stayed with my aunt and uncle in Montauk Point NY. My uncle Ken, was, and still is, a big fan of Ralph McTell, and I heard a lot of his songs growing up as a child. So your version of this song brought back many good memories!
Play on! |
Hi Glenn
