NGD: Gibson L-5 1934 RI (pictures added!)

Hi folks,

I've never bought anything online and the only archtops I've ever played were cheap imports.

Yesterday I decided to make a totally irrational decision and indulged in a brand new L-5 1934 RI.

UPS tracking says the package will arrive today. Can't wait!

Joe

OK here are the pictures!

As someone said a long time ago, this thread is useless without pictures! :)

Post some pics here once you've received that fine jazz box, Joe! Sounds like a sweet one for sure.

Wow, Joe! That's fantastic! I hope you love it.... I came very close to buying an L-5 a few years ago but never could get over the last bit of hesitation.

Let us know what you think!

Oh man!

Just when I've decided archtops are too expensive so recently shelled out for a couple of Guilds.

But my heart is with archtops....

...waaaah...

Well, UPS tracking removed the delivery date, so I may not get my guitar today after all.

I wish I could post the pictures from the dealer but those are gone, too!

I was about to buy another Martin but figured I may as well spend another grand and get the guitar I've always wanted.

Thanks for the support, guys. I'll be in touch!

Still no pictures but the guitar made it safe and sound, and it is absolutely stunning. I don't think I've ever owned anything this pretty.

I've often complained about Gibson's QA but this is something else.

I love how the high notes are loud and clear. I can hear all kinds of overtones when I play single notes.

Playing fast and furious runs is tempting thanks to the short scale and sparkling character of the instrument.

Now, here's my dumb question of the week. What kind of strings should I use? Just to give you an idea, I play John Pearse PB Lights on my Martin, which I think is a popular choice. What would be the equivalent for acoustic archtops?

I'm sorry, but in order to answer that question we will need proof of purchase - such as actual pictures of your guitar :D

Wow, it sounds like a beauty - how cool!

I still keep an eye out for an L5 and will keep looking until i find one.

As far strings go i use Diaddario chrome flatwounds in .011 gauge on my ES 350.

Congrates on your L5 love to see some pic's.

Congratz! I'm sure you've found a friend for life.

True Story: Back in '66 I was stationed with the Army in Germany. Our battery had about 175 men in it, give or take a few. We also had an old 30's era Gibson L-5 that floated around that we called our $17 Gibson. Whoever sold it always sold it for $17. If you bought it, it was assumed that the price was $17. I owned and sold that guitar three different times in a 32 month period.....always sold it for $17......always paid $17 for it. It wasn't a beauty contest winner, so to us it was just an "old guitar".

Some time in its previous past someone had cut a 3" round sound hole in the front of it and it was pretty rough looking too, but that old Gibson didn't seem to care about all of that. It sounded off like a cannon and played like butter. Wish I still owned it today (even with the dumb looking round sound hole in it.) In all likelyhood, probably one of the best sounding/playing guitars I've ever owned.....despite its looks! And it had Zagerized frets on it. Got 'em naturally........from 30-some years of use. Those were the days!

i came back to see the pics, but they're not here yet.

i'm holding my congrats till i have visual proof ;)

Taylorplayer 09-29-2010 03:24 PM

Well, I for one, am dissapointed that there are no pics of this guitar yet! ;) As for strings, I liked the way flat-wounds sounded on my archtops.
