Paul Simon's Martin On Conan Last Night?

It looked like a dressed-up 0000 / M to me. Anyone know exactly what it was?

Most likely it's the OM-42PS.

The Paul Simon signature model Martin is an OM-42 - I think the official designation is the OM-42PS. I've played a few and they ARE cannons.

If it looked bigger to you, bear in mind that Mr. Simon is a little bitty guy - I think he's about 5 feet 4 inches tall.

Yep, Paul's custom OM-42 PS.

Great guitars, it ain't just bling, OM-42s are wonderful, more going on than the 28's, folks may prefer one or the other but the differences in sound are there. And OM-45s...........forgetaboutit!!!!

Did he play Martins during his career? I always remember him with a Guild or a Yamaha.

I believe he played a Guild F-30 and a Guild D-212 (12 string) back in the S&G hey days. He then used Yamaha for awhile and now I mostly see him with his signature Martin 0M-42. Wikipedia has what looks like a current list of his guitars. There's a few Taylors on there as well. I've always been a huge fan of his playing-aside from being one of the all-time great songwriters (IMHO).. I have a CD of S&G playing a show at Lincoln Center around 1965-66.. and he plays so well for a young guy- very professional-and original all at once.

Mike:)

In the early Simon & Garfunkel photos when he has a guitar in his hands it was usually a Martin dreadnought, though I understand that a lot of the recordings were made with a Martin 00-18. Then after he and Garfunkel parted ways most of the live performance photos of Simon that I've seen have shown him with a black Yamaha Triple O copy, which he gigged with for quite some time.

I happened to meet the Yamaha R&D luthier who built that guitar for Simon when I visited Yamaha corporate headquarters in Hamamatsu, Japan. Nice guy, and very pleased and proud that Simon used the guitar onstage so much.

According to interviews I've read, though, Paul Simon's personal favorite among the many guitars he owns is a custom Gurian jumbo that he ordered with a wider neck than was common for Gurians.

When I saw him at Princeton University in 67 he was playing a Martin.

And an Ovation in Central Park!

I'm looking thru S&G clips on YouTube and there's clips of him playing the Martin you mentioned and the Guild (as well as others)... I've heard him talk about the Gurian too-

Mike:)
