What non-traditional tonewoods do you really like?
Mahogany, maple and rosewood aside, what non-traditional tonewoods do you really like? Reasons can be tonal, aesthetic, both...

You can't much beat the look of Macassar ebony. There is a great looking and playing (but very cheap-sounding) all-laminate Zebrawood Ibanez Artwood model that I think would make a great stage guitar. And I'll never complain about spalting in a piece of maple. That's all aesthetics though...
Tonally, I've found that it's good old mahogany or bust for me, although I've been impressed by Seagull's cherry and walnut offerings, as well. |
I like walnut.

Another nod to Macassar ebony. Not only a really pretty wood but I love the sound of my Macassar guitar. It has a lot of clarity and focus and is quite loud. Hard to know exactly what aspects of the guitar's tone can be attributed to the ebony on the back and sides but it certainly isn't holding the guitar back!

I don't know whether it's the build or the wood, but yew has been really satisfying for me so far.

I recently played a Furch OM-21 in Sitka over black walnut that was absolutely outstanding. Love the look of it, and the tone was kind of a mix of everything good about mahogany with the clarity and punch of maple. Seriously powerful guitar with a ceiling I couldn't reach. Very impressed.
Have also liked walnut on the Gibson J15. For top woods, I'm a purist for spruces, with cedar thrown in. Don't care for hardwood tops. |
Florida Gatorwood is a fantastic tone wood.
