Trey Anastasio's (Phish) guitar rig & words of wisdon

I was delighted and totally facinated in listening to this unpretentious star as he explains his rig. Thought you might enjoy too. His words of wisdom (to paraphrase): it's more important to know your equipment than to have the best.

Trey's rig is/was quite old, but it gets the sound he likes and he knows how to use it. That being said, his guitar is a custom made Languedoc arch top, and it is incredibly fine...and I think in the $10,000 range. I've got serious guitar envy for that fine instrument.

Here's Part II.

That was very cool, thanks for posting. He seems like a cool guy and very down to earth!

Just to say, Trey has since updated to a bunch of newer amps, pedals etc...

His newest rig is here:

Some really nice stuff.

The video is a little old, but it does give a lot of insight into how Trey sounds like Trey. I actually used a rig similar to his small rig, 2 Tubescreamers and a Keeley 2 button compressor in place of the Ross.

I have watched a bunch of the Rig Rundowns, and as a mostly acoustic player, I find it interesting that so many electric guitarists say that they want raw tone, like the guitar straight into the amp, but then they still put a half dozen pedals in the signal chain. This begs the question, do they really NOT want the raw sound of guitar into amp?

Postnutter, I had the same thought too. If he really wants a 'straight into the amp' sound, what's all the pedals for?

So cool to see the level of delight he takes in creating guitar music.
