Andres Segovia speaks the truth

Hello all:

I ran across this quote in a local book store and confirmed it's legitimacy on line (which means it's got to be true):

Andres Segovia,
" The guitar is the most unpredictable and least reliable musical instrument in existence...and also the sweetest, the warmest, the most delicate, whose melancholic voice awakes in our soul exquisite reveries.
Andres Segovia "

Every time I pull out my Ramrirez, I live into this...

Peace, Love, Nomad

Nice quote! I saw him in '78 at A Very Fishy Hall (Avery Fisher) in NYC.

Amazing man. I saw him just a few months before he died in '87. He was having to stop and cough in the middle of songs. After his third encore, he came out without his guitar and apologized for his performance. He told us to keep our ticket stubs and if he was still alive on the same date next year he'd come back and play for free.

Ninety Four years old - and still loving what he did so much.

Have you still kept that ticket stub?

That is a fantastic quote. There is something special about the classical guitar, it's very personal. The way you hold it and play it with your fingers directly is almost intimate and that imparts the tone like a direct connection between the musician and the instrument itself. In fact as a guitar maker myself I see the luthier as being a 3rd part in that equation. Guitars are incredible instruments.

Haha - no, long gone. I had a shoe box that was about half full in about '95 or so. I thought it was silly to hang on to them all. All those years running the record store, and so many shows. Not something a minimalist hangs on to;)

He didn't know the half of it...
He didn't have to deal with pickups. :D

Another favorite Segovia quote (from memory, so it may not be 100% accurate):

"Any problem that cannot be solved with a good guitar is either not solvable or not a problem."

In about 1981 my mother dragged me to the Alte Oper concert house in Frankfurt to see Segovia. The opera house had recently been restored from bomb damage in WWII and the whole thing had a cool vibe. Truth is, I had no idea who Segovia was and, notably, that the guitar could be played that way at all. I was into Hendrix (still am) and that was guitar. Anyway Andre opened my mind that night, in guitar speak “blew me away”. What an astonishing experience to see an instrument I loved played in a way that I had never imagined.

Cool story. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I'm pretty sure he never tried to play clarinet!
