I'm in. I've been challenged to make an instrumental of Oh Holy Night for a gathering. Great melody. I have the progression so the work begins. What else is new?

Just spent 1.75 hours on those same 4 bars plus the pickup. Ugh. Got it good enough to move on tomorrow.

Ok, got my song sheet put together with the right chords and timing. I checked out a couple of videos on You Tube (don't judge) to ensure I had my timing and strum pattern correct and the intro riff tabbed correctly.
Now I'll work through the song - its got an F chord - I just recently nailed down barre chords so no problem playing it but getting to the barre chord fingering position quickly is a challenge for me. I may have the use my "lazy man's G chord" fingering (300003) to assist with the quick changes into and out of the F barre chord. Toad's "Something's Always Wrong" is in a high key on the record - capo at 6th. That's higher than I can even attempt to sing, but it seems like I can adjust the capo and the song holds up in a lower key. I'll find the key I like without lowering it too much from the recording. I should have this in recognizable shape by the end of the weekend. |

Still working on Entertainer and Luttrel. Busy this week and past weekend, I didn't practice as I usually do. I practiced tonight for an hour. 1/2 on each tune. |
Spent 1.25 hours on part B. I can play the first 12 bars now (1 page in the score). Not perfectly in time and at tempo but good enough darn it!
|
Failed miserably last night. After 45 minutes I still couldn't play the intro and section A through so I gave up and went to bed. Sigh.
|
Nailed the first 12 bars of section B and played the intro and section A nice and cleanly too. It's a good night. On to the next chunk of section B. 4 more bars then it starts to repeat with a different end tag so it should be smooth sailing from here on.
|
Couldn't get anything right last night but it was at the end of a 5 hour practice. I was pretty tired. Back to the drawing board tonight. :(

Back on track. Learned the next 10 bars last night.
|
Learned and played all of section B last night. Played all 32 bars without a mistake and one small hesitation. Very happy. Moving on to section C.
|
No so fast. Spent almost 4 hours on it last night and it still needs work before I can continue. Luckily I have the afternoon to myself so I can focus some more time on it today.
|
After 2.5 hours of trying I played the intro, section A and section B all in a row without stopping. Yay me!
I watched section C. Looks tricky. |

I'm adding Toby Walker's arrangement of Cincinnati Flow Rag to my list. I've been meaning to learn it and now is a good chance. It's right in my sweet spot of playing technique wise. Its good to do songs that push you, but you need a break and just learn something for the fun of it too.
