thin body, nylon string, electric, no-holes guitar
 

As most of you know, I am into nylon string guitars. In one five year period I went through 40-some guitars. I'm now going back to pursue one particular type of nylon string guitar--the electric.

I've owned the Gibson Chet Atkins and Godin solid body electric nylon string guitars which were early entries into electrified nylons. They were both way too heavy for my taste. The Parker is a cool solid body guitar, but it is too light for my taste. What I would like is a hollow body nylon string electric.

The Kirk Sand and Rick Turner seem to be the top of the thin, hollow-bodied, electric nylon string guitars, but they are beyond my price point as far as exploration is concerned. And so, I've been looking at the bottom of the line.

I would be interesting in knowing if any of you have had any experience with any of the inexpensive products. For examples: the Angel Lopez ec3000cn, the Antonio Hermosa Ah-50, the Hadean EA-100.

I would also be interested in other options along the same line. This type of guitar is a jazz instrument. I suspect that it has a fairly limited market, but an important one. I would like to see, what the fuss?

Hi Evan. I can't really help you, except to say that because you haven't specified that you're looking for a CF guitar with this one, your thread might be better served being in the electric and/or classical subforums. Just a thought.

Evan, I'm not familiar with those you've listed. Godin Multiac and Line 6 are the only ones that come to mind, and I'm not sure of whether there are nylon models.

I build guitars strung with nylon string using a carbon fiber soundboard. But it is a 3" deep archtop with an oval sound hole (in fact two, as I add a soundport on the upper rim).

It is primarily an acoustic guitar. Although I regularly add a SBT pickup. I use the CF for its ability to make a super light and responsive archtop that can project acoustically with nylon strings. Not sure what benefit you would get from using CF on a solid body guitar.

I don't know of other nylon string CF guitars. Most are whole cast guitars made tip to tail of CF. You put a lot of work into making a form, and experimenting or tweaking a design is not easy. I think that is why there are few builders building with CF.

I did a bit of fishing on the electric guitar thread, no response. I also searched the thread for info, not much there. That makes the CF thread appropriate is that I might consider a custom CF build for the type of electric guitar noted.

I know you are looking for more of a solid top but if you ever run across an old Ovation Viper EA63 they are fantastic Nylon Electric guitars. Very hard to find but I finally tracked one down at right around a $1000.

I too have owned a good many different Nylons looking for one that worked well with my Steel String guitars as far as playability and output volume. I've owned 3 different Godin's and they are very nice indeed. Also had a Gibson Chet Atkins and thought it was nice but really thought the Godin Ambiance with the built in Aura system sounded the most natural but pretty low output.

Also had a Takamine TC135 and thought I would really love it being I play a lot of Taks with Cool Tube preamps live but alas it was kind of a dog.

When I was in a staff band in Wheeling, WV at Jamboree USA I got to see all kinds of acts through there. When we opened the show for Steve Wariner many moons ago he plays a decent amount of plugged in Nylon in his act.

He had a few with him one being a Rick Turner the other was an Ovation Viper EA63. They both sounded fantastic through the Theater system. He told me he had just gotten the Rick Turner and loved it but he still loved the Ovation so he took them both out.

They are a chambered Mahogany Body and not the Lyacord back (It is a Sprayed material over the wood that makes it look like there regular backs but it's just a coating over the wood. I've seen some out there that actually have a wood back that has no coating.

This one is a keeper. Has loads of output to keep up in a band and sounds really great through a good system or Acoustic amp. They are not super light but about the same as any Strat or Tele style guitar.

Mine looks just like this one. They also came in natural and I think white.

Thank you for the information and picture of the Ovation Viper, it is a new one for me. It's a beautiful looking guitar and the Ovations that I have played have been very nice.

My Godin was an easy playing, sweet sounding instrument and I've sometimes regretted selling it. The Turner is a quite different instrument with its particularly hot pickup system. The Godin and Turner, like the Chet Atkins, seemed heavy to me. I want a light weight electric.

I also want an electric with no sound holes. Part of that desire comes from my liking for the Danelectro U2, another guitar that I sometimes think I should have kept--unfortunately it was steel strung.

The Kirk Sand may be the closest nylon string electric to fit my desire, but it is way out of my price range for a try-out. And so, in looking to try out a hole- less guitar I'm heading for the low end, the previously mentioned inexpensive guitars. If I like the fit of an inexpensive instrument then I may try to talk Alistair into a custom CF rendition.

Evan, have you looked at the Carvin lineup? I have never played one myself.
