do I add a pickguard?

I just bought a pretty new Takamine ETN10c. It doesn't have a pick guard. Would you add one? I'm not sure what to do.

Cedar-topped guitars are going to show wear, so yes, I would add a pickguard. Plus, it's a dreadnaught and IMO, dreadnaughts look off without a pickguard.

cool pick guard

Along with this question, is there any place to get a unique/cool looking pick guard?

Check out Stewart MacDonald:

Forget Steward MacDonald

You sure do need a pickguard if you strum, and strum hard.

If you play fingerstyle, it's less necessary.

I have gotten Martin pickguards on eBay, and they had (maybe still do) the classic Martin-issue teardrop pickguard in a variety of models.

However, if you want to add a cool tortoise-like pickguard, then go to Maury's Music and check out the Greven Tor-Tis pickguards. They cost a lot, but they look great. Avilable in dreadnought size and also the smaller OM style, in a variety of colors and patterns.

Whatever you get, don't get black. It's just too severe. Unless, of course, your guitar happens to be black.

wood pick guard?

I'm seeing some very nice looking wood pick guards. Any experience? I'm wondering if they would dampen the sound at all.

Greven Dalmatian Guard

I am always partial to the Greven. (GR-D28 @ first quality music):
