How do you pronounce Ibanez

I hope it's not ee ba nez, since I've been pronouncing it eye ba nez for about the last 35 years. Why did you have to start this thread and mess up my head?? ;)

bjewell 02-19-2011 07:49 AM

It's ee-bah-nez in Japan...

TaoMaas 02-19-2011 07:51 AM

We've always said, "Eye-ba-nez" around here.

t1m 02-19-2011 07:54 AM

Eye-ba-nez

never heard of anybody saying ee-ba-nez...

Mike_A 02-19-2011 07:54 AM

its "eye - ba - nez" now but i think its a corruption of the old common spanish surname "eee-ban-nyez" usually spelled Ybanez.

Bob Womack 02-19-2011 07:55 AM

eye-buh-nez

DB Cooper 02-19-2011 07:59 AM

Same here.

Well I'm a dutch guy and I have NEVER heard anybody say EYE-BAH-NEZ. I believe (and I'm almost certain) it's EE-BAH-NEZ.
I think the use of eye-etc. is typical for the english-speaking countries. English/american english speaking people can't pronounce 'Amsterdam' either...

:D:D

I've read that the intended pronunciation originally was "eee-BAHN-yez" (taken from the spanish word "Ybanez") with the accent on the second syllable and a "~" over the "n" giving it a "y" sounding slur. But Americans are not real good at dealing with foreign sounding pronunciations. Americans see the letter "I" and they tend to pronounce it "eye". And since the "~" pronunciation mark does not exist in American English, Americans simply ignore it. The rest is history.

Well, you're wrong I'm afraid. :) And, I'm American and know exactly how to pronounce Amsterdam. But, disclaimer, I lived there for 5 years. I still can't pronounce Schiphol properly though.

Knew a guy with surname Ibanez. He pronounced it "ee-BAHN-yez".
