Pickup Information

Hello all.

I purchased a 1971 Harmony Sovereign H1204 a couple weeks ago. It needed a bit of work here and there, but overall it is in pretty decent shape. Anyway, somewhere along its journey, someone installed a pickup and output jack in it. I have never seen anything lie it, so I am hoping someone may be able to tell me something about it. The "preamp" part of it was screwed to the neck block. I took it out because I figured it was some cheap piece of crap that someone had thrown in it. I got curious about it today and stated taking a closer look at it. You can see in the pictures that it has a dark circle on the back of it. That is actually a pickup. I plugged my amp into the jack and tapped on the circle. It is definitely the pickup.

My biggest question is, how could this have sounded decent with the pickup touching the neck block? I would think that it should touch the top of the guitar somehow; where all the vibration is. I am not opposed to reinstalling this thing, but I want to make sure I do it right.

I have seen these before, but like you said the ones I've seen were on the top fairly close to the bridge. If you look on eBay you can find them. I think the ones I saw were on archtop guitars.

DeArmond made some similar, but they were round on each end.

This looks similar to a contact mic.like schertlers dyn
Series....as with the dyn you place it around the
Guitar until you find the "sweet spot" .
The neck block may have been that "sweet spot"
To the original owners ear.??
It is certainly worth a try..but it looks
A bit sketchy to me..let us know how it sounds..
Looks like mid 70s technology.
