Brazilian brands
I'm going to Brazil for a few weeks and I think it would be a great memento from the trip to bring home. I would love to pickup a handmade guitar but I think that would be expensive, even for a gringo like me. Any one know of any good Brazilian brands to look for in case the whole handmade thing doesn't work out for me?

My Daughter in Law is from Brazil and my Son and their family visit there quite often. From what I have heard from Her, and her brother (who plays BTW) there is not a lot of high quality hand made guitar business down there.
You will find the few odd local builders, mostly all nylon string. And some imports etc. For a better chance look for a Gianinni (sp?). They have a wide range of instruments available and are decent quality. But if you really want to bring home something Brazilian, then pick up a Cavaquinho. You can get a low level Gianinni for very little US dollars. And they are just plain fun as anything. Think of a steel stringed Braz Uke used in lots of the local music. They brought me one for a birthday present a few years ago, and it's a hoot. I couldn't read the book they brought, sorry not Port. spoken here. So I tuned it like a Mando and had a blast. Real fun and very much Braz. |
keep in mind the import restrictions
no braz rosewood, and no ivory |

where are you going? i performed in rio de janeiro last november. if you are traveling there, go to RIO SCENARIO in LAPA, the best place for listening music in town. Eblen Macari |

Please bring back some rosewood for me. Thanks. OMO |
For anybody who wants to know, I did not pick up a guitar. They all play the same Japanese or Mexican brands that we do. I did pick up a cavaquinho, however, which was a great pickup. Thanks for all the input.
