ideas for female vocal songs
My wife and I will be performing in two weeks and we want to do more songs where she does the lead vocals. Any sugestions? Our current songs include covers of Buffett, Van Morrison, CCR, CSN, Bob Seger, Eagles, Stones, Bon Jovi, etc., with a couple newer songs thrown in. Thanks for your input.

I just started working a bit with a female singer. Some of the stuff we're working on includes Carly Simon, Sarah McLachlan, Alannah Myles, and Fleetwood Mac. If country isn't OUT, I successfully did some stuff with another female singer prior- The Judds, The Wreckers, Patty Loveless, Sugarland. Just some thoughts...

I put a post up about a great song I've learned recently....simple and even in my vocal range, so I'm sure it would be doable.

Several years ago I heard a male/female duet do the old Merilee Rush [later Juice Newton] "Angel of the Morning," alternating lines until the chorus, and it was way cool. I've done that song for years from a male perpespective and it works, but the duet really brought a new twist to the song. Made it more like a conversation.
Other than that, don't forget Linda Rhondstadt's songs. Always a crowd pleaser. "Keep Me From Blowing Away," is my favorite of hers. |
Surprised that nobody has mentioned AKUS yet ?
Most anything by Alison Krauss and Union Station would be a great for male female duet situations. I have even done a couple with a female singer that used to perform at the local coffee shop. Another great one is Whiskey Lullaby. |

We like Benatar. Which of her songs do you think would work with just an acoustic guitar?
|
It depends on her vocal range, but some good old stuff I would recommend are:
Janis Ian (anything from the album "Between the Lines") Carole King Roberta Flack (sp?) My wife has had some success singing Neil Young songs such as Tell Me Why and Heart of Gold. She has also done a rendition of City of New Orleans (Steve Goodman) that I think sounded pretty good, and Luck Man (Emerson, Lake and Palmer) which gave it a surprisingly realistic fresh twist. Dare to experiment and do the unexpected...the results may surprise you! |

Do me a favor and check out Amy Martin and Kate Rusby. Both can be found on Itunes.
