I just received the MXR ECHOPLEX PREAMP foot pedal. It adds 11 db of gain to your signal....So howzit sound ?? Like adding an extra gain or presence knob onto the amp...in other words...wonderful !!!!! I wasn't sure I need this but after hearing the difference it makes....its a keeper !!! It makes the guitar sound more rich and full....very professional sound...

Well actually I'm just getting the bare essentials to get professional sounds for a home recording studio. Having all these pedals in house should really make a difference in the sound of my recordings. I'm hearing it already. Luckily I'm getting very good prices on used pedals in very good condition. Most of the pedals are coming in the original box with all paperwork.

You see, I have most of these same effects in Sonar which I can add after the fact of recording a dry track. However I was taught to get the best tone and effects done BEFORE recording as it makes the mixing job much easier. So in order to do this properly, you need a good selection of effects on which to draw from. I'll be working with a variety of artists who will have their own ideas of what sounds best....so having a nice selection of quality effects makes sense to me. Right now prices are very reasonable and there's some great bargains out there.

I got my first Echoplex back in '77 at a little guitar store in Maryville, TN. I bought it on impulse, actually. Besides the swimmy echo the thing imparted, I was also impressed with that "certain... special... soomethin*," probably a little touch of upper-mid glassiness, it added to the sound even when adjusted to unity gain as it was intended. I can imagine that would also be cool if you can add it with increased gain.

To be clear, this is just a preamp, not an echoplex echo effect. Preamp only !! But it sounds great !!!!

For echo I have the Tera Echo and the Tone City Tape machine which does a great job emulating an echo machine....

Yep, the Echoplex preamp affects you sound whether or not the echo is on.

BW is correct. Back in the day, many guitarists used the Echoplex tape delay. What was and is cool about it is that it's preamp (tube or solid state) affects the tone of the guitar in the most WONDERFUL way.

The current wave of Echoplex pedals are primarily based on the EP-3 which designer Mike Battle gave a KILLER JFET preamp. It gives a sweet upper midrange sheen that is not harsh. It makes overdrive pedals before it clearer and sweeter. Put into a Marshall it is tonal Nirvana. This kid sometimes used two in fact. One as a pre, one a delay. :

Yes there is a Echoplex tape delay unit available for about $400 which has the actual tape machine in the box with the pre-amp. They also make the Echoplex PREAMP foot pedal, which contains the PREAMP ONLY. That is what I bought. There is no echo effect with the pedal I bought, it's a preamp only, and a mighty fine one at that.

Yep, we understand. I was commenting about the effects of preamp that the original box has which was the unit your preamp was based upon. I'm on my second now. Back in the day I built an echo cancel switch into my pedal board so that I could use the Echoplex preamp all the time.
