Guitar Riffs on Franz Ferdinand cover "Was There Anything I Could Do?'"
The Scottish/English rock band Franz Ferdinand did a great acoustic cover of a song by the Aussie band The Go-Betweens called "Was there anything I could do?" -- a song about the significant other dumping the protagonist to seek "fulfillment."
A universal theme, we might all agree. Anyway, it shows how you can do a great song with just 3 chords -- Emin, C, and D. No bridge. No chord changes in the chorus. It certainly +helps to have a great bass player and drummer, but the song works anyway. I can't quite figure out the what the second guitarist, (Nick McCarthy) is playing up the fretboard. I think the Eminor is the Dminor shape but what he is doing for the C and D, I can't quite make out. And then in instrumental interlude, the lead singer, Alex Kapranos, is also doing some stuff up the freboard at the high strings I can't make out. Anybody have thoughts? Song starts at 0:42. |

He's playing this: Code:

Try this: Code:
e|---------------------------------------------------------------------------| The trick here is in the second line. Play the E on the second string with your ring finger and keep that note down as you play the first string with your index and pinky fingers. That way the E rings out and creates a bit of dissonance. . . |
