New Martin Standard Series Unveiled

Wow, has anyone checked out Martin's new standard line? They did a great job. I'll be saving for either the new HD28 or the new om28.

The D-18 is no longer "standard series?"

aaronwinter 01-11-2018 11:20 AM

Yes, the D18 is still in the standard series. It's under the tab, Standard Series. The standard D28 is in that section too. The 18 was updated in 2012 and the 28 last year. They just redesigned all the others for this year. The new HD28 is almost exactly like the HD28v with the exception of the vintage style saddle and neck profile. It now has forward shifted scalloped braces. The D35 has a shaded top and tortoise pickguard and 1.75 nut.

Are you ready for this? The D-18 is still a part of the "Standard Series" but there is also now a series called the "Standard Series Reimagined." Yes, your immediate thought is likely the same as mine. Here is the page listing all the Martin Series guitars: https://www.martinguitar.com/guitars/

I've always wondered why the 15 and 16 are excluded. It reminds me of a "mom always liked you best" kind of thing, lol.

'Reimagined'? What the hell sort of word is that?:D Is it my imagination (no pun intended), or is the 'Reimagined' HD-28 exactly the same as a non-reimagined model, but with the exception of short pattern vintage fret markers instead of dots?

It's "Martin-speak"! :D I guess you gotta call it something?

If they said "redesigned" current owners would say, "what's wrong with the old design." They'd get buried with unpleasant emails, lol.

I know what you mean. My 000-15m is my favorite guitar and they should do some sort of upgrade on the 15* & 16 series, but there is just that "something" about having a standard series guitar.
Tom

* wider string spacing as a standard feature on some models.

Actually, the new HD28 has forward shifted scalloped bracing vs. standard placed scalloped bracing. The new one has a shaded top, butterbean tuners, and a 1.75 nut. So some pretty significant differences there in terms in tone.

- and with that 1.75" neck went my hopes of ever owning a new D-45 again...

Taylor calls it "re-voiced"

Cibby 01-11-2018 12:29 PM

I like the forward shifted scalloped bracing on the HD 28. I prefer the the old style low profile neck shape on my 2004 HD28. The new High Preformance neck shape just never felt right to me and has nothing to do with the 1 3/4inch nut width. I'm probably in the minority on that. I guess if I want a new Standard series I'd have to adjust to it.
