Fender/Squier SA-100 vs. Epiphone DR-100
What do you recommend out of these two: the Fender/Squier SA-100; or the Epiphone DR-100?
My Rogue 090 I bought for $50 is about to die. It served it's purpose by getting me to stick with the guitar, but it's time to move on. My local music shop doesn't sell either brand, so I've had to resort to Youtube review to listen to both guitars. And honestly, I like the sound of both guitars. I know both the Squier and Epiphone is lower-end, but I don't feel my skill level is to the point yet where I can justify spending anything over $150. Which explains my interest in the guitars. I did consider smaller guitars to help with my freakishly small hands, but I really like the sound of a dreadnought. And I've found that tuning the guitar down a couple of notches and putting a capo on the 2nd fret really helps with the reaches. It probably looks strange, but it works. So back to my question: the Squier? Or the Epiphone? (I'm willing to listen to other suggestions outside the two mentioned, but until my skill level improves, I'm not spending anything more then $150. I'd rather spend the money on instructional books and DVDs. And booze. :D) |
Hi Angera. I can't comment on the two guitars listed because I haven't played them. One guitar I would look at is the Yamaha FG700s. It's goes for $199, but is really a great guitar for the money. It has a solid top and sounds great. At least to me. I know that it's more than you want to spend, but I think it's probably worth the extra $50. Of course it's easy for me to spend your money. :) Just thought I'd throw another guitar in the mix. Hopefully somebody will be along to comment on the two guitars you mentioned. Good luck and I hope you find the guitar that is right for you.

Hi angera. i havent tried those models but ive tried low end fenders n wasnt impressed. the epiphones ive tried have been ok so out of the 2 mentioned id go for that. totally agree wiv kcrabbe on the yamaha. ive played the yamaha fg700ms which u may be able to get slightly cheaper due to its matt satin top n it was a really good guitar. unbelievable for the price. also great at that price is the washburn d10s. both very impressive.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've never personally played a Yamaha, but I know a lot of people love 'em. |
+1 on FG700s

Wow, you guys weren't kidding about the FG700s. I've been listening to some sample on Youtube. Nice. Very nice. I hope to find someplace so I can try one out.

Another vote for the Yamaha FG-700S. Can't go wrong there.

I think you are getting the idea but I'll add my two cents. I'd also say save up and go for a Yamaha. They seem to be consistently good guitars. Even the all laminate one you commonly find sounds pretty darn good. None of the cheap Epiphones I've played had any kind of tone or volume. The Squier acoustics I've handled have that old school cheapness to it them that most manufactures have banished. It wouldn't be any better than what you have now.

I'm with everyone else. There a huge difference between a $100 squire and a $200 yamaha (or equivalent.) Save up a little longer and go for the nicer guitar. You'll never be sorry you did.

Another vote for the Yamaha. It will keep you happy even as your skill develops.
