Help me celebrate 40 years of building! Wood Choices!
OK, so 2012 marks 40 years since I whittled my first banjo neck (literally!!!) I was trying to think of something really special to build for the event and what I have decided is that I’m going to have all of you help me design it (this also includes my Facebook friends and some other internet acquaintances), when it’s done I’ll send it off on a “Road Show” to see how good of a job you guys did.
What I’m going to do is post a different question every few days leading up to Jan.1, 2012 when I will begin the build (meaning on New Years day I’ll glue up the top and back) This will probably take me a while since it will be a side project but your never know... OK, so first question: What body style? I make primarily dreadnought and OM models but I do have a parlor, 00, SJ and jumbo but I’d need to build new forms for them to work with my current system. |
Wow....congrats on the milestone:up:
I'd like to be the first to sign up for the Road Trip!!! My vote is for a good old Mahogany OM;) |
I'll throw a vote too.. Smaller guitar - be it an om or a 000 or a 00. Go with Todd on mahogany too. This should be fun to follow. thanks in advance,

I think we are jumping the gun on wood choice:D
that's for another post! |
I'm going to vote for a dread. Luthiers, at least in these forums tend to gravitate towards smaller body guitars, but I'm a dread guy.
|
I shall vote... a banjo.

Harvey,
Congratulations! Great idea to do this. I'd say OM for sure. As far as a road trip, we often have Twin Cities AGF get-togethers and it would be great to coordinate the two. We could get quite a few AGFers to sample your work that way. Thanks Chuck |
Congrats on this huge milestone. How about a modified dread?
|
Harv,
Big congrats of surviving 40 years! I vote for the perfect Baby Boomer guitar size, 00. Steve |
Congrats Harv! I am with El C -- OO is such a comfortable, well projecting body style that's my vote!

Great idea! It should be something that's a culmination of your work, maybe something with four defining features symbolising each decade and as an added suggestion having four distinct images on the top, something similar to this as an example of what i mean http://www.dreamguitars.com/detail/2...t_corset_no_1/ but on an acoustic of course with again each image being something iconic from each decade.
Body wise how about trying something like a Batson guitar? |
So your first build was 1972? Sort of the tail end of the folk boom, so something folky like a 00 would be my choice.
And I'm thinking something like this for the inlays: http://flowers4u.files.wordpress.com...owerpower1.gif :) |
Cremona, 00, SJ, or Parlour.
In that order ;-) (my Cremona has turned out to be a killer slide guitar, btw) |

Congratulations Harvey! That's an amazing accomplishment all on it's own.
My vote is also for a smaller guitar, 00 would be great! |
