Is there such a thing as a uke-guitar?
After discovering the Kala Uke bass (bass the size of a uke) it stands to reason that you might be able to get a guitar-like instrument - i.e. similar range to a guitar if not an exact minature version - also in a uke size factor if you used the right strings.
What kind of thing exists in this space if anything? |
Kala themselves do the http://www.kalabrand.com/guitars/guitarlele but this isn't quite there really if it's similar to a guitar capoed at the 5th fret as they say.

Perhaps a tenor guitar fits this definition- a smallish, four stringed guitar. Usually they are tuned in fifths but no reason you couldn't put them in standard(ish) tuning with the right strings.
|
a 4/5 string instrument sounds more likely since it's less 'crowded'; one tuning I wondered about was EADG i.e. the 4 bottom strings of a regular guitar. Get those power chords flowing?!

What about a baritone uke - 4 strings tuned the same as the top 4 on a guitar?

They are bigger, yes, but not a whole lot.
I don't know an awful lot about them, but our church's pastor has one. I saw it and asked about it because it was bigger than a uke but had 4 strings only. Side note: asking about the uke started a discussion which led to me getting back into guitar playing after a 25 year absence :) Edit: https://ukuguides.com/guides/the-ukulele-buying-guide/ |
The Yamaha 21" scale JR1 pretty much fits the bill and is dirt cheap.
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guita...ni-folk-guitar I have a low tuned mandolin that I built based on the baratone uke body size, but that's an 8 string instrument. |
You are probably thinking about a "Guitalele" - most decent guitar stores should have one or more in stock.

Just saw this today - may be worth having a look, smaller than a parlour:

The little Yamaha GL-1 has proved quite popular... 6-string tenor Uke. I play mine all the time.
Cordoba also makes their "Mini" series... Pretty much a full-sized classical neck on a small body. |
I believe there are a few co's that make 6 string Ukulele.
Here's one that can be tuned like a guitar…although not inexpensive. https://www.musiccymbals.com/product...enor-ukuleles/ Here's a video of Daniel Ho playing one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Zlq...BC1327540EC08D |

The Baritone Ukulele fits the bill the closest, oh what a sound. On my wish list!
The tenors are lovely. We have sixes and eights. Something about a Guitalele just sets me wrong - I tried.
