I would like a little advice. Lots of members have posted comments about building their own cabinets and adding humidity control components. What materials would work best in construction? Can anyone share a few pics that I can use in design? (2 dreads)

I designed this--didn't build it--to match our furniture. I only requested that the woood panels be fitted tightly. Astonishingly enough, it holds humidity perfectly, even in our dry and warm Arizona house. I just keep a bowl of water on the bottom shelf. Stays 45-52ish all year. Swing String arms. Drawers for music materials. Added my own LED spots.

Tanque - love that cabinet (had to look a few times to determine it was the same cabinet and not 2). Is that the GS-Mini? (edit: just saw it in your sig).

There's an article in Vintage Guitar this month about a company that builds these. You might check their website for some ideas. I can't recall the name right now.

For the OP, something similar could also be accomplished by retrofitting an old TV or gun cabinet, a curio, or an armoire. I searched for months in used furniture stores and on craigslist but couldn't find anything that met my specific dimensional requirements (there was only one spot in the whole house I could place this cabinet). So I had one built. But I still can't walk through a furniture or antique store without brainstorming a few possibilities.

Wait, so did you put build in humidifiers in there?

There are no humidifiers in this cabinet. Just a bowl of water. Actually, it's what florists call a frog: its a bowl that has a separate lid with holes in it. In our wet season, I put the lid on. In our dry season, I take it off. In our very dry season, I might add a second bowl. The humidity stays 44-52 all year round. Most of the year, I can feel the humidity when I open and reach into the cabinet.

None of the wood shows any ill effect of humidity, but bear in mind that the interior never rises above 52 and the exterior never rises that high.
