My Second Build Class Guitar

Well, it had been a while since I updated my Build Class #2 webpage, and since then it has been completed, traveled the country, and lived a fairly active first few months :)

A friend of mine in VA (who was also a staff member at Maggie's Place) had a chance to play it has been wanting to have some pictures to show some of his friends. So, I present to you my "almost cell phone quality" photos taken on my Kodak Zi8 video camera:

I opted for the faux tortoise-shell binding versus the ivroid

The end graft ... same wood from my dad's guitar :)

Also, after bringing her home, I took a few videos (compiled into one video here) to document how she sounded in her first few weeks. The videos with me in it was also a test for the audio quality coming into the Kodak Zi8 (MXL 603s, going into a cheap Yamaha mixer, and then into the camera). The other player is my old music partner (who since moved ... hopefully she won't be too mad that I put her in here). That was done with the straight microphone.

The 10 year Maggie's Place anniversary is this weekend and hopefully I can get the strap buttons dropped in before Sunday so I can play it. It's hard to believe that 10 years ago I couldn't play the guitar and I was writing most of my songs on the piano. Time flies!!!

Looks great. Your video stalled after a few seconds. Sounded good what I heard. Likely my soupcan internet signal!
As a guy on the beginning of his second build. What was your biggest thing to overcome on the second build? What still gave you brain hurts? I checked out your other link. Neat story. BTW I didn't know what a Dreadnought was 6 years ago. Barely picked up an instrument in my life prior.

Pics didn't load for me, but the video worked. Sounds and looks great!

Man, I want to take one of those build classes. :)

I had the server move that was scheduled for last night and I the photos must not have been moved over :( Sorry about that ... they're there now :)

The biggest obstacle that happened this time (beyond getting hit by a car while I was cycling in the middle of the class) was being over-confident on shaping the neck. The first time went so well that this time, I just went to town and went thinner than I wanted to.

It's odd, because the one thing I thought would give me the most headaches this past time that didn't is pulling the sandpaper where the neck and the body meet. The first time, I kept on messing up the angle of the neck, but this time went fairly trouble-free.

The other thing that really gave me a headache was a sand-through on the headstock :( I had to keep on applying finish and it just looked messy after the many tries to NOT sand through on the edge of the headstock.

The "brain hurting" moment was trying to make all the pieces fit for the headstock inlay. There was a lot of cutting ... snapping ... sanding ... but all in all it worked out great (George and Diana are patient people).

Gitnoob ... if you can find something in your area, it's definitely worth it!

Hi, thanks for the reply. Sorry you got hit. Yikes.
I agree, a class if available is worth it. I enjoyed doing it "on my own" but if it wasn't for a few folks to lean on I would have never made it. Next summer I am pondering shopping a class. I'll have three? Four ? under my belt. It would be nice to hit a class for refinement.
