Taylor GSRS First impressions

Got my GS yesterday and gave it a test... Silky smooth action, love the neck. Best Taylor I've played. Initially came with light strings and in comparison to my Larrivee d05 mahogany it was very transparent, clear midrange and very nice high end. I'll have to say that the Larrivee more than holds its own, sound of the Taylor maybe better on the clarity and definition end but the Larrivee was better on low end which was surprising to me. I then changed out the Taylor to medium elixirs and the guitar responded much better. Still get the clarity and transparency of the guitar but have some low end which I personally prefer. Playing through a Genz Benz (have a L.r. Baggs I-Mix installed) and notice there is little or no coloration to the guitars sound with this setup. Absolutely thrilled with the sound & I've had some very nice guitars. I'll probably end up selling my Larrivee and purchasing a McPherson with a redwood top to compliment this fine guitar!

Welcome to the GS family! Did you buy this new, or used? I was told by Taylor that the GS series all come with medium guage strings. I also have the GSRS. I just love it! I still think its the best sounding guitar for under 2000 cheeseburgers!!

I got it used, but only a couple of months and the guy had some lights on it.
Seems to be very versatile, I can fingerpick a bit and really hammer it with a pick and it will not break up! Looking forward to spending more time playing it.

welcome to the fold jefrobie, I really love mine too.....because mediums tear my fingers up and I can't do any bending of the strings, I had to put custom lights on my GSRS, and still those big piano like lows are there....

I put lights on my GS RS also. I'm over 50, so I'm allowed to. Its in the AARP rulebook:D

A little bit of sustain and volume is lost. I'm thinking about putting mediums back on next string change.

I've gone back and forth on mediums and lights. I prefer the lights, but after they've broken in a few weeks. Volume? I still have to watch it around other guitars and I can easily overpower my own voice. Sustain? I have no sustain problem. Mediums seem to sound better out of the gate, but lights also sound great... it just takes a tad longer after a string change.

Give light - mediums a try.
Keep the nice bottom end of mediums and
the playability of lights up high. Works for me.

I agree. Try them. I've found they work well on some guitars.

I tried them on the GS, however, and found that it really pulls the sonic spectrum out of balance more than on other guitars where I've used them (x15's, GCs, Martins). The plain steels end up sounding thin and weak, but they don't with straight lights. Why? The only thing I can figure is that it's a matter of balance. I have come to prefer lights on the GS for several reasons. With the right strings (or at the right age of string) the guitar is much more versatile for my purposes with lights.

Thing is, that's my experience, and other people would not have that. Guitars (even the same model) are different. We all play differently. What we want to hear is different. So 'speriment!
