Favourite Female Guitarists ???
I'm delighted to see the current thread for the ladies amongst us.
I'm just a mere male so I didn't feel it appropriate to contribute there, but it occurred to me that we should have another thread to honour guitar playing ladies. I'll start (in no particular order - just as I thought of these fine musicians): 1. Elizabeth Cotten 2. Ana Vidovic 3. Mary Flower 4. Rory Block 5. Katy Melua 6. Eva Cassidy 7. Eliza Gilkyson 8. Joan Baez 9. Joni Mitchell 10. Emmylou Harris 11. Mary Ford (remember her?) 12. Mimi Fox (great jazz guitarist) 13. Mother Maybelle (how could I have forgotten her?) 14. Kaki king 15. K T Tunstall 16. Rosetta Tharpe 17. Bonnie Raitt 18. Ani DiFranco 19. Devon Sproule (I gigged with her) 20. Tift Merritt Well, there are far more great female singer-songwriters and musos that I can "see" but can't recall their names. So, c'mon guys (and gals) - I "challenge" you to add to this list !! |
Ann Wilson from Heart..... I believe that Nancy just sang, but could be wrong about that.

Pure guitarists? Probably Janis Ian, Vicki Genfan and Mary Flower.

Etta Baker, Muriel Anderson, Sharon Isbin.
And Joan Jett. |
Courtney Hartman, monster bluegrass flatpicker who played with Della Mae. She is currently my favorite guitarist, not just my favorite female guitarist.

Interesting story: she bought a no-longer-used church (big gothic structure) in downtown and located her own record label, Righteous Babe Records, there. |

Nancy Wilson used to be really good, back when Dreamboat Annie first came out. In later years there were other guitarist that did most of the more difficult stuff. I saw them do a 30? year anniversary concert of Dreamboat Annie, and Nancy said she was amazed that she used to be able to play those leads. She's still pretty good.
Charro hasn't made the list yet, but she should. She plays classical. |
