Great info, no wonder my all nato Yamaha has a hispanic accent.

do you feel an unusual desire to wear a blue beret when playing this guitar?

I'm glad I ran across this thread. A wealth of info here and I learned a lot of wood types and such.

I always thought NATO wood was a wood that the North American Treaty Organization made.

If you put "nato" into a wikipedia search you get North Atlantic Treaty Organization. You have to put "nato wood".

What is everyone overall opinion of Nato as a tone wood? I've never played a Nato constructed guitar I thought sounded good.

lol :D

I thought NATO was an alphabet soup designation for laminate wood made from HOG. :)

"I've never played a Nato constructed guitar I thought sounded good."

Very likely, they all had laminated backs and sides.
And not unlikely, they had laminated tops, too.

Nato is an acronym for "Not A Tree Originally."

Beat me to it - but I always said Not a Tree Ordinarily.
Not a great tonewood; not a mahogany either. Though on occasion I have seen some flamed laminates that looked interesting.

That's funny because too me it doesn't FEEL like wood. More like plastic.

Aw, shucks, that's what I wanted to say.

The thing is, we could only judge that (still subjectively) if there were many all-solid, quality acoustic guitars around with nato back and sides.

You could reason that if it was a good tonewood they would use it for such instruments, but that's not exactly how it works.
