Songs for Open D tuning
Hi,
I'm new to this forum and find it very interesting. For past 3 months I've been learning basic chord positions, a few runs and movable chords in Open D. I find this tuning very melodic adn of course the open chord gives a bit of time for chord changes. I play mainly fingerstyle, accompanying songs to my vocals. Anyone got suggestions for songs where accompanying in open D sounds good. I've done a few Joni Mitchell and adapted some James Taylor, Tom Paxton, and a few other traditional folk songs like Water is Wide. Any suggestions welcome. |
The cave - Mumford and sons.
Excellent song. |
Leo Kottke's version of "Little Martha"

Some Options
Here are some of the sources for my playing pleasure:
Steve Grossman Mike Dowling Dale Miller Jewel Allman Brothers Van Halen Ed Gerhard Laurence Juber Alice In Chains Led Zeppelin They all have printed tab or DVD's with Open D tuning. Some of these are capo'd. I have found Mike Dowling's arrangement of Amazing Grace to be very well done, though I have adjusted it to play without a slide. |
If you want to put a few bucks in, John Fahey's instructional material has quite a few great-sounding open D tunes, as well as some in open G. guitarvideos.com sells his stuff.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eP3RJGqn2Pk The Black Crowes' "She Talks to Angels" is normally is open E, but works better for my vocal range at open D. I keep my Silver Creek T-170 in open D most of the time for these songs. |
"Trouble In Mind" by Mike Dowling & Pat Dohohue is a great song to play in Open D.

It's all over now Baby Blue, Bob Dylan.
|
Stephen Stills=Stills Alone is my favorite, just him and a guitar, several songs in drop D.
|
John Denver's Poems, Prayers & Promises is in Drop D.

Neil Young-Harvest Moon is a good one

Thanks for all your suggestion out there, keep any more coming please.:)

Many of the songs that are played in D will sound good in drop D.
You may have to capo up the neck for your vocal range though. |
