Boss RC-50

I was watching a you tube video of a guy using a loop station and it was amazing. Naturally, I went to my local music shop and with my usual reasoning, I ended up buying the best (I always regret buying cheaper) and I now own a Boss RC-50. The owners manual reads like War and Peace. Can anyone give me a quick launch tutorial on how to get started with this thing. I am a little overwhelmed and it's going to take me a while to get through the manual. I want to start using it now. any help would be greatly appreciated.:):):):):)

While I've had mind for a while, I'm still in learning mode. That said, there are some excellent pdf files under the support tab at the following location:

These are helping me more than the owners manual.

You'll also find there's an issue with syncing your loops. Below is a "workaround" that helps with syncing. I'm not sure where I came from but it does help.

FYI, there is a software upgrade that also helps, you should install it if you are not on release 1.01.

If it makes you feel any better, this is not a simple looper. It's pretty deep; there's a lot you can do with it. You won't learn it overnight.

Good luck,
LeonD

I've seen a lot of complaints about the RC-50 on this list. Imo the issue is caused by the loop quantize feature and infact it's documented in the 1.01 OS release notes. But if you carefully read the release notes the workaround is not to use the rhythmn mode. Let's first take a good look at the release notes.

-----
* Priority Given to Rhythm (Factory Default) *
This preserves the performance rhythm from the time that recording started.
When you operate the pedal, the performance-start location is adjusted and playback is started accordingly. Although it may sometimes sound as if playback has started from the middle of a phrase, from the following loop, playback takes place as recorded.

* Priority Given to Sound *
This starts playback from the beginning of the recorded data.

Note, however, that for the rhythm guide, recorded phrases, or recordings synchronized with MIDI, playback starts with “Rhythm Priority.”
-----

What you have to do is this:
- put your RC-50 in Sound Priority mode (see release notes for details)
- do NOT use the Rhythm guide; this will turn the loop quantize feature on and causes the gap

It's more then most will need. I had one since It came out and never used it to full capacity so I sold it last month and replaced it with the small RC2 looper which is fine.

I had the RC-2. In 2 days I knew I would out grow it. I sent it back and ordered the RC-50 it is a very nice rig and I have not been able to want it to do anything I could not make it do. The RC-2 I found to be limiting by only 1 loop at a time.

I am past the initial learning period with this unit and it is actually pretty easy to use. There is lots more to learn but I like that. I wont outgrow this unit anytime soon. The software upgrade is a must. Thanks for the help.
