Dion Model NO.04: Birdseye, Engleman

I've spent the last few months tinkering around with lines on a page developing a new model. Here it is, Dion Model No.04.

So many thin pieces of wood, soon to be a guitar.

A beautiful rainy Saturday morning in the shop. Back laminations completed on a hollow core back.

What's the purpose of this if I may ask? Not so sure I've seen this done on a back before. I am assuming it's akin to the nomex core of a double top? And how did you make the hollow core? Apologies in advance if this has been explained in your previous threads before! :p

That is an attractive shape. I would like to play this one when it is finished.

Hey Marcus, thanks for taking a look at this build thread. This is an idea I got from my dear friend and former shop mate Jeremy Clark of 52 Instruments. The intention of the hollow core back is to evenly control the stiffness in all directions. I achieve the hollow core back by using a centre laminate of Nomex, and control the stiffness by alternating the grain direction of the various layers on either side of the Nomex rather than by the direction and size of braces. (There are no braces with this design) The result is a very active back, contributing to the colour of tone and projection of my guitars. I can't speak much to how this compares to the double top concept as I've never built any. Though I believe part of the double top concept is based on lightening the top, the hollow core back weighs about the same as a regular braced back, but I've found them to be much more active.

Thanks Daniel, I'm hoping to have this one ready to take to the Vancouver International Guitar Festival.

I think I can make it happen! Will you be exhibiting?

Full cycle guitar building. From tree, to shop, to guitar, to compost, to vegetable! Wood shavings from Thursdays work.

I'm still debating on whether to use ebony or this beautiful Birdseye for the fingerboard. Thoughts?
