View Full Version : UK Get Together Summer 2007

I am wondering whether any UK members of this forum would be interested in a guitar/music get together sometime this summer.
I am considering hosting such an event at our place here near Southampton in Hampshire, provided there is some interest. We have plenty of room both inside and outside to do this and, weather permitting, we could combine the whole thing with a barbeque in the garden. We can also offer a heated outdoor pool (heated to around 30 deg C) for those of an aquatic disposition...We could cope with kids and spouses/partners as well, as long as there are not too many and on the understanding that kids are their parents' responsibility in terms of potential pool-side supervision etc.
I have not decided on a date yet but would assume that a Saturday would be the best day, certainly for me, and I guess, probably for most others as well. I'm sort of looking at a Saturday in either June, July or August.
Thoughts?...
Sounds good to me! Count me in if I'm available on a date we choose.

OK, campers. I've just exchanged e-mails with Chris Williams. Chris is one half of a great acoustic duo with Pete Smith who together represent Taylor guitars in the UK as guitar clinicians.
They want to come to the gathering in the summer and are happy to do a workshop as well as (possibly) an evening gig for us.
So, please let's have some support for this event. We will need to nail a date down as both these guys need to sort their schedule out.

I'm really hoping I can be in the UK when this goes down...sounds amazing! My UK home is in Sussex so no problem for me and the kids to get down providing we're there at the time.
Thank would be excellent. Pete was going to meet up with us in December but unfortunately couldn't make it.
Dates that are almost definitely no-goers for me are...
Weekends of
14th April
5th May
16th June
23rd June
30th June
21st July
25th Aug
1st Sept

This sounds fantastic, and I would love to come, but it's a very long way for me, so I'll have to think very carefully about it and see how it fits in with other things. I'd struggle with either of the first two weekends in August, and I'd rather avoid the bank holiday if poss.
I'll watch this thread with interest!

Hi guys,
I would like to try and establish a date for this as soon as possible. The longer we leave it the more difficult it's gonna be. Also fixing a date now means that people can earmark it well in advance. we all know that whatever date we go for some folks won't be able to make it, but that's life.
I am going to tentatively suggest Saturday July 28th as this is definately ok for me and, as the organiser, that's quite important !
Best wishes,
Ian

Fliss has got a new mandolin.
Heh heh... I don't want to hijack this thread so I'll start one in Open Mic and post some pics, but yes, I have a new mandolin built by Phil Davidson, and Sam joined me for a trip down to his workshop :D

Hi all, the date is now set for Saturday 28th July. Both Chris Williams and Pete Smith are also up for this so mark your diaries accordingly...
BTW, anyone attending Martin Simpson's May workshop this year ????
Ian
Cool. I can't wait. It is in the diary. I've PMed you a question.
Is the martin simpson workshop in france?
I would have loved to go but getting the holiday off work and the money made it a no-go :(

Adrian,
No, the France workshops are held in Grasse in September. I am attending the workshop in Sheffield in May. It takes place over a weekend and is MUCH cheaper than the France workshop.
All the best,
Ian

Hi Ian
I would be very intsted to come to your summer get together, as would a mate of mine. You might be interested in us coming too I have a Sobell, and my friend has 2 of them (one of which used to be Martin's).
Please drop me a line on my email if you've still got space, and perhaps we could sort something out.
Kindest regards
Adam

Just thought I'd inject a bit more life into this thread. I recently attended a Martin Simpson concert near me and have a got a couple of guys coming who I met there. The good thing about MS gigs is that you always find a number of guitarists in the audience.
But the 6 million $ question IS... WHO ELSE IS COMING ?
I would like to get some idea of numbers and anyone who is contemplating coming will need to know where to come and have directions and so on...
Can anyone who intends to come (including anyuone to whom I have already confirmed address details and directions) please indicate to that effect.
Can I have some feedback please ????
Cheers,
Ian
My wife and I are coming! Let me know what I can bring drinks/food wise.

Ian, I'd love to come but I'm sorry it's just too far for me at that particular time. I hope you all have a great get together and hopefully there'll be another opportunity before too long.

Well, it happened ! We had a total blast as well and were completely blown away by Pete Smith's guitar playing, very ably backed and supported by Chris Williams. If you ever get the chance to see them, do it !
I managed to blag a few extra guitar players from outside the forum to come along as well to flesh things out a bit. The weather could have been better, but luckily we have enough room here to accomodate everyone indoors.
A brief list of the attendees :
Jacob (I blagged Jacob at this May's Martin Simpson workshop in Sheffield which we both attended).
Eric (Another guitarist I blagged at a recent Martin Simpson concert down here)
LeftyGuy (aka Guy) from the forum
Age (aka Adrian) and wife Jo from the forum
Terry Miles - from the forum
Chris Whitfield. I met Chris at a Martin Simpson concert. He's a local Southampton lad who plays really mean guitar. Check him out at : http://www.myspace.com/chriswhitfieldguitar
Mark ( a friend of Chris Whitfield's)
Me (Ian)
Pete Smith - amazing guitar player
Chris Williams - Pete's duo partner
Plus assorted members and friends of my family.
A really good do and many thanks to all who attended and made it such a great bash. We will be doing this again !
May well post some pics when I get around to seeing who took what of whom.
Cheers,
Ian
