Would anyone be interested in an acoustic guitar gathering in the south west / west country area of the UK?

Not sure yet. I'm based in Chippenham, Wiltshire. I wanted to guage interest as to whether to organise one.

Where in SW are you?

Old friends of mine live near Chippenham - I might be able to attend a gathering in that area (probably sans my Taylor though) and take the opportunity to look these friends up at the same time.

(probably sans my Taylor though)

What does that mean? I'm probably being stupid not realising! BTW I know what a Taylor is ;)

Collins says sans is "an archaic word for without" - though it's still used in newspaper articles and so forth.

Now don't ask me what Collins is.

Sans is French for "without".

:)

I'm in Dorchester from Sept 20 through 25. Tho' I doubt that's helpful.

Thanks for the info - though we probably need to arrange a meet a few months in advance to get more people to commit to meeting up.

Anyone else interested in a meet?

Anyone else interested in a meet?

I would be - depending on location. There's another "Brit-Thread" with quite a few posts, but we seem to be quite widely distributed across the UK (I'm in North-East England)

sans is indeed French, Collins is a superb drummer.

I'm up for it. Something Bristol / Bath would be great for me. Hope it comes off.

I'm in Nottingham but would be interested to come along, as long as the standard of playing is not too high!!!

Um - it's gone very quiet. Is this still a goer? I'm happy to meet anywhere in the square between Birmingham, Exeter, Oxford, Rugby.

By the way I have a spare ticket to see Martin Simpson and Martin (we're not worthy)Taylor at Newtown mid Wales October 28th if anyone's interested - otherwise my 'I'd rather be at a boot sale' missus will fill the seat - would be nice to have muso company.

I'd be interested in a get-together, I'm in Cheshire and could travel. I'm another one who'd ensure the standard of playing wouldn't be too high :)

I used to live in the SW...I'm in the West Midlands now...

If it's close enough, I'll give it a go...

Anybody off to Sheffield this weekend for Martin Simpson's workshop? If so, I'll see you there.

............................................. I'll take that as a "No" then

If we can organise a get-together I wonder if we could get a guest player or guitar company to come along?

My thoughts are that we could arrange a venue and a date, then contact either a British Luthier (Lowden, Avalon ??) or possibly a distributor (Sound Technology do Taylor) and ask then if they want to come along. If they were up for it they could bring along some guitars or talk to us about building them or whatever! Just an idea.

It depends whether you want to keep this very informal (i.e. a few of us getting together to stumble through some stuff) or make it a bit more of an event.

What do you think?

Good idea . I think getting together to discuss this for any further meets would good. Doing something for the first one might be a bit of a pressure.

I agree, it would be great to look ahead to something like that, but my vote for the first one would be something fairly informal.

I agree. I think meeting at someones house or a musician friendly pub would be good. A get together with our guitars for chat/drink/jam.

Does anyone have ideas for a venue?

I thought your country estate was available ;).

I guess a pub with a private room would be OK. Shouldn't be more than £50 for a day and if we split that it will be less than £10 each.

The town needs to be sorted first though and I have no experience in that M4 / M5 area.

My own local in Malvern is very musician friendly but doesn't have a private room. However, there is a bar that's empty during the day. Noise overspill from the main bar later on is the only issue but a late morning start and all the afternoon would probably be enough (?).
If the landlord agrees I don't think it would cost anything. He'd be happy for the extra bar income.

This is about 20 minutes from J7 on the M5 which is further North than originally proposed but for those in the West Mids, Cheshire, Nottingham etc. this may actually be better?

Does anyone else have a view / knowledge / suggestions?

That sounds like a good venue and I would imagine reasonably easy to get to for alot of people. The only tricky will be to decide on a mutually agreeable date.

Is this something that we want to do before Christmas, unfortunately I don't have a free weekend until December and that month is usually pretty busy. However I could do Saturday 2nd or Sunday 3rd December otherwise it will have to be in the new year for me.

Let the date negotiations begin! :-)

Those dates are fine for me but for my local, Sunday is out as they serve meals in there.

I'm semi-retired so can pretty much make any date and location.

I think it would be a shame to delay past Christmas: but I appreciate others don't have as much free time to play with.

The venue would be okay for me, it would be around a 2 hour drive each way. Saturday sounds better than Sunday, pubs are usually very busy on sunday lunchtimes / afternoons, less so on Saturdays.

I'll have to check on the date - the mandolin ensemble I play with has one concert coming up and it might be that weekend, so I'll get back to you on that!
