A small confession...:

I have been obsessed with re-living the weekend in El Cajon -- Reuniting with one old friend and several new/old friends; The music, the knowledge gained, and unbelievably friendly atmosphere that was present throughout the event!

Well, the plane ride back to Chicago on Sunday was reserved mainly for sleep, but as I flew off to Minneapolis Monday afternoon for business (Yes, my wife now Officially hates me!), my mind couldn't stop thinking about the wood that will soon be the DGSM (Da Gutch Slobbering Method) guitar. Putting stylus to Palm Pilot (paper is so passe'...), I threw together some lyrics for the first "Ode To T-Stock".

Here's the challenge -- Put your creative thinking caps on and let's hear your musical take on...:

Holy Cocobolo
Dave Gutshall

VERSE
I’ve been having dreams
In hues of red and black,
Medullary veins of grace
Have made their way across my face

Silky white like moonshine,
A voice so strong
She sings so clear
I hear her ringing in my ears

PRE-CHORUS
Mexicali Sally’s always been a friend of mine
But I have fallen hard today
Sweet Honduran Hannah’s always made me feel so fine
But my mind’s now set
I’m off to get my…

CHORUS
Holy Cocobolo
Colorful, she’s made my days
I can’t wait to hear her play
Holy Cocobolo
Wonderful, she’ll make my nights
I can’t wait to hold her tight

VERSE
Batman, he had a vision
The Caped Crusader and his Ward
In their masks they headed toward
An image, They stared in wonder
Such Loveliness,
They’d never seen

PRE-CHORUS
Mr. Freeze and Joker always put them to the test
Though they always lost, it seemed
Now the foe they’re facing is much stronger than the rest
It made Boy Wonder
Start to Scream

CHORUS:
Holy Cocobolo
A paradise with figure tight
I’ve looked for her with all my might,
Holy Cocobolo
She, and I will solo
Someday soon I don’t know when
Oh, I want her back again
Holy Cocobolo
Her Neck, her shoulders seem so real
I can’t forget the way she feels
Next to me

I'm hearing it as a very upbeat rhythm with a fair amount of syncopation in the melody. I haven't had a chance to write my own music yet as I'm currently sitting in a Holiday Inn in Bloomington, MN, sans guitar, and won't be back home until Friday. So, here's your chance to beat me to the punch!

Have fun with it, and let's see what you come up with!!!

Holy Cocobolo, Dave!

so where is the mp3?

Good question, Joe!

I spent last weekend recording a latin/jazz style arrangement of the Gershwin classic, "Summertime" that Rob and I worked on during TaylorStock. With the exception of my horrendous vocals, it turned out pretty well.

Unfortunately, that's going to be the last acoustic recording I do for a while. My only acoustic, the beloved LKSM-6, is leaving today for it's new home in Florida. It will be remembered fondly for its performance on the TGF CD and the TaylorStock Open Mic, but had to leave to make room for the "Cocobolo Cannonball" as I've named it - The T-Stock Custom 814ce Ltd.

My hope is that it arrives in time to lay down tracks for the Christmas CD. At that time I'll record "Holy Cocobolo" as well.

Until then, where's your take on it?? :)

What's my take on it? I dunno, is it sort of a Jimmy Buffet type thing? It could be pretty funny with the right music. Maybe a Ray Stevens type thing?

As I've said before (but not here) I like your sense of humor!:)

Let's hear "Summertime" while it still is!

Here is a link to my "thread" (of 2 responses!):

Okay, don't say I didn't warn you about my vocals...

Here's the link to "Summertime"... (http://www.twicebakedmusic.com/music/summer_vox.mp3) It's a big file as I wasn't planning on it being for general consumption.

BTW, constructive feedback is always welcome!!!

Dave, sounds great! A very nice arrangement (including the vocals!)

Would you mind discussing some of the recording equipment and techniques used? I just bought the BR-1180 digital recorder (no CD) and I'm having a tough time with the drum tracks. I'm trying to get my act together for the Christmas CD and I also need to figure out how to get the recording from a BR-1180 (w/o the CD) on to a CD. I'll have to keep experimenting before the deadline.

Dave, bro, nice arrangement and performance(s)! You sing on key! Already that makes you better than almost everyone on "American Idol!":)

I like it! Who'd of thought you could groove to "Summertime?" Betcha George would dig it, too!

a 20 minute download though, and I have a DSL line!

Hi Vito! how's things? How was your vacation in Hawaii with the lovely Mrs. Vito?

Who makes a BR-1180? If you have a CD burner in you computer, it's just a matter of hooking up the output of your BR-1180 (whatever it is) to the audio input of your computer (IF it's a Mac this will be simple) and re-recording it into an audio recording program. There are even free ones out there. I think even the vaunted ProTools makes a freebie. The burn that file onto a CD and sent it to Gutch. If you don't have the CD burning capability, email me the audio file and I'll burn it for you.

Thanks for the feedback Joe! Sorry about the download time - I wouldn't think a 6MB file would take 20 Minutes on a high speed line... The original idea was Rob's (Rlwing), I just ran with it. Ultimately, it will have Rob's vocals on it, or an instrumental lead, or both! I'm thinking of playing around with it a bit more, add some strings after the solo and kick it up a notch.

Vito -- I'd be happy to share the info with you:

Guitar - LKSM-6 recorded using a Marshall MXL2001-P Large diaphragm condensor mic, positioned about 4"-6" from the guitar and pointed toward the bridge. Recorded flat and minimal EQ applied post.

Bass, Piano- Roland JV-1010 synthesizer module performed on Roland A-70 MIDI Controller. Recorded real time. Bass - One Take. Piano - Too many to count.

Percussion - Performance by Armando Borg from the "Musicians Toolbox" that came with Cakewalk Pro Audio v6. Took the basics of an 18 bar performance and edited for use in 270 bar song. Drum voices come from the Roland JV1010.

Recording equipment - Roland VM-3100Pro digital providing 24-bit 96KHz digital audio recording direct to hard drive via RBUS and Roland RPC1 card. Utilizing SONAR v2.0 for MIDI sequencing and Audio recording. Plug ins include BBE Sonic Enhancer (forgot to turn it on for the recording you hear), Timeworks Reverb, Cakewalk Standard EQ.

I agree that interesting drum tracks are difficult to build if you are not a drummer. Best suggestion I can make is to spend the money for sample/MIDI rhythm discs. Another option that I use is the "Session Drummer" in SONAR. Allows you to lay down a rhythm track in a variety of different styles and time signatures.

Hope this helps,
Dave

Thanks for the info. The BR-1180 is Boss with the Roland technology and is essentially the next generation BR-8. It's a great little toy for under $1,000 for the weekend warrior. I just installed a CD burner so hopefully with an easy hook up I'll be able to burn the master into a CD.

Joe- The trip to Hawaii was great...thanks for asking. We just came back on Sunday and it was real difficult getting back to work today after 9 days of sitting by the pool, hiking, bicycling.....and so on and so on. Mrs. Vito (Mary) is doing great but I think she's ready to retire from work after the vacation (at 32! ...I want her life :) )

I'm going to be in your great city of NY mid-October for business so maybe I'll run into you at a Taylor dealer! Hope all is well.

Who's that sexy devil singing? ;)

Joe, it took me about 2 minutes via cable modem, maybe something is/was up with your DSL?

Why, it's Englebert Humperdink enjoying a delightful cocktail of percocet, Darvon, and Valium mixed ever-so-carefully with chocolate milk...

Gutch,
Very cool arrangment, heck I felt like I was in an island hideaway getting ready to enjoy a beautiful sunset :D Nice groove.

BTW, it only took me a minute or so to download.
Sure hope your Taylorstock guitar gets made in time.

You know, the Jeff Rearick tracks only took a couple of minutres apiece, so I was figuring it was Gutch's server that was slow, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Just another Internet traffic jam I guess!

Vito, if you get a spare hour during your trip to the Big Apple I'll take you out for a drink. I might even show you my W65!

Glad you and Mary had a nice "Holiday In Wakiki" (Kinks fans'll know that one!)

Dave, it is clear that you love to make music!

If you are big on chocolate milk (and who isn't) check out a tune on Rufus Wainwright's latest CD "Poses" called "Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk." I love Rufus' stuff!:) I am amazed at what he can do with 2 chords ("The Greek Song") and the lyrics are incredible (I think).
