Just a quick announcement about a show this Saturday at 8:00 at the Border's at The Pike in Long Beach, CA. There are three acts on the bill: Dan and Leland (a very talented acoustic guitar duo - http://www.myspace.com/danandleland ), Phil Hurley (a great musician who has played with the Gigolo Aunts, Tracy Bonham, Fountains of Wayne and more - http://www.philhurley.com ), and I'll be doing my solo acoustic/dobro instrumentals (links in my signature). It should be a great night of music. Hope to see some of you there.

Bryan, it's just a little too far for me to get to, but have a great time and much success.

Hi Bryan
It's kind of far from Alta Loma to Long Beach, so I opted to see/hear you at Russ place this coming Sat. :)

That works, too, though I'm not sure what Russ' book selection is like. :)

So, Bryan, how did it go ?

Pretty typical coffee shop type gig. I played for about 45 minutes and I think I played well. I had a tough time connecting with the crowd, probably due to the layout of the venue, but I managed to sell a decent number of CDs and get people on the mailing list. I'm used to playing with bad sound on stage, and this was no exception, but people told me it sounded good in the crowd, which is the main thing that matters. The dobro songs went over the best, as that isn't an instrument many people play instrumentals with. I ended up reworking my setlist, as some of the sparser songs would have been completely lost in that environment.

I prefer to play places with an attentive (captive? :) ) audience (who doesn't?), but it is good to play for a crowd that isn't there for the music. I had a few people off of my mailing list make the drive to the show, but for the most part the three acts were all playing for strangers. It is always humbling to hear the response of a group of strangers. The two other acts were really giving it their all (and sounded great - excellent songs, guitar work, and singing), but they had the same issues I did.

We'll all do some more shows together in the future, hopefully a bit closer to home and in better venues. We're already planning a house concert, which should be a lot of fun.

Border's was nice to work with, despite the shortcomings of the layout and PA. They were quite appreciative of us and treated us very well.

Thanks for asking,
Bryan
