Just got pics from Tom Doerr of the guitar he is building for me - a Malaysian blackwood cutaway guitar with a sinker redwood top. It will be a stunner when completed.
Will update with more pics as I get them.

You're a lucky guy Davidyan! I can't imagine the excitement in getting pics and progress updates on a guitar that someone is building especially for me. And from the look of your pics it's gonna be a stunner!
Looking good David.. Grats!!

Hi David...
Just a quick note...
If you will go to your photobucket files and reduce the largest ones by 50% (the edit button above each picture), then they will fit without us having to scroll. It not only causes us to have to scroll the pics, but the text as well because it ''widens'' the entire page of posts.
thanks...
Nice... I think Jarvis has got one coming around the same time as yours?

That guitar looks great, and I'll bet it will sound even better. Hopefully one day I'll have photos of my guitar in progress to share.

Way to go David....that was fast...Tom did a really good job of joining and matching the backs very well...
Paired with that rare sinker redwood with the Malaysian Blackwood...I've got a feeling that its going to be one sweet sounding guitar....
Congrats and do keep us updated ....

I opted for a simple abalone rosette.

Hey David, I love your headplate. It really ties in neatly.
I had a hard time choosing my headplate but thanks to Tom's advice, it was finally decided.
Any idea what a sinker redwood/MB will sound like?

Congrats! I am having a guitar made by Simon Fay that is a Claro Walnut/ with sinker redwood, it looks fantastic so far. Simon is in the middle of applying the french polish as we speak. The sinker redwood has awsome tap tones I cant wait to hear my guitar! I know how you feel, getting the updates.
Here is the link to my luthiers website if anyone is interested.

Hi C.S.
Mine may be one of the very few MB/sinker guitars ever made. It would be a really unique creation. I'm not even sure if Tom knows exactly wat it would sound like until he strings it up, but from the tap tone of the sinker, he's sure it would sound great. From Tom's experience, sinker redwood keeps sounding better over time. I'm sure he can coax the best possible tone out of this wood combination.
Tom really put a lot of effort into the MB headplate to get it bookmatched.

It will certainly be a great guitar. Tom is making refinements to his designs constantly, so while the wait is hard, more is going into my guitar as time goes along.

I hope you can post some sound samples when it's complete - I'd really like to hear how it sounds as well as how it looks.

I will update pics as I get them, but sound samples.. have to figure out how to do it. In fact, here's what my guitar would look like with the sinker redwood top, but mine would come with a cutaway, a simpler abalone rosette and abalone around the top.

Hi Diamondave,
I understand from Tom that the sinker redwood he is using on my guitar was initially picked up by you for your guitar, and it's the best piece of the lot. So you went for a spruce top instead? When would your guitar be ready?

Hey Davidyan, I visited Tom and picked out my Brazilian and in the process saw how amazing the sinker was! I picked out the best taptone& look then had Tom set it aside to be paired with cocobolo. A few months later I bought a Goodall from the NAMM Show that was port orford cedar and robusta back and sides. I got the feeling that the two guitars would be similar so I want to take a different route with Tom. I think the next guitar I am going to build with him will be cedar mahogany- Your guitar is going to be so nice man I can't wait to hear how it sounds! Peace

Hi Diamondave,
When my guitar is done, you should go visit Tom and check out how it sounds before he ships it to Singapore. Let's see if it is as similar as your Goodall as you had envisaged. Any pics of your Goodall? Shalom.

Hey Guys/gals. Sorry to sound du,n here, but what is a "sinker" top?
This redwood log had been submerged in a lake/river for many decades, hence the term 'sinker'. There's more info here at this link if you are interested:

And yes, it will be a uniquely beautiful guitar. According to Tom, the sinker top has one of the best silking he has ever seen.
