View Full Version : TaylorStock Guitars: Payment? Deposit?

Fellow TaylorStockers......
......though I would love to have a guitar 'personalized' to my specs, I've already spent a bundle just to get to and participate in the event......
I have several guitars and other things I can liquidate to raise some 'play money' but time is running short and I have procrastinated. (Not unusual for me.)
Does anyone know:
*Do we need to make contact with a dealer prior to the event?
*Is a deposit or full amount required prior to or at the event?
*Or, is the full amount due when the guitar is delivered?
*Any idea as to time span between the event and delivery of guitar to the dealer?
.....I think you get the idea......
Thanks for any insights offered......
Rick

Although I'm not positive, I believe that you order the guitar from you're local dealer and you are simply picking out the wood when you get there.
However, I may be wrong.

Rick:
Here is a post from J.R. in the "Choosing Woods and Inlays" thread:
"Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, and Yes. Anything the custom shop would do, you can request at TaylorStock and pick your own wood for the guitar. Pretty much whatever you dream up, they'll build it. Bring your own inlay patterns, etc. Likewise, you can have a standard model built from the wood you choose. There will definitely be people there to assist you, including Bob himself. As I understand it, you'll get an order number that will be assigned to your guitar. Then, you'll simply work with your local dealer or the dealer of your choice to place the order. Cool, eh? VERY COOL! I've got all sorts of ideas running around in my head. I can't wait to hear the Rosewood/Redwood guitar! That might clinch it for me...
J.R."
As far as deposits, this varies by dealer but the one dealer that I will probably deal with requires a non-refundable... <snip>

If I don't choose any "custom" options but just opt to pick out some wood - I shouldn't have any problems with ordering after the event, right? I doubt that I will have time to seriously contact dealers before the event since it looks like I won't be buying locally.
Maybe I will try and check out Buffalo Bros. and some others while I'm there...

I've been trying to this for the past three WEEKS. This has included multiple trips to my dealer AND multiple phone calls to Taylor. So far I've gotten the same answer to all of my questions from both the dealer and Taylor. The answer is:
"I don't know"
All I wanted to know is how much to substitute an abalone rosette on a 712, how much to upgrade the top piece and how much to upgrade the rosewood. I shudder to think what would happen if I had a custom inlay. I'm pretty irked right now given that nobody seems to be able (or even cares) to answer my questions. It's not like I'm asking for the recipe for cold fusion!

Thanks for the responses and tips folks.....
David: Sorry to hear of the chaos up that way. I hope to be talking to Marion at Holloways prior to the trip.....just have had lot's going on and haven't been by there yet. If he has any insight or can help I'll let you know, even though it is a few hours away for you......
Later....

Okay,
I finally decided I had waited long enough. So, at the suggestion of Jennifer Meinel I contacted Great Neck guitars in Wichita Falls, TX. They got back to me with an answer in 10 minutes!! I also asked them to quote me a price on a 712c and a 912c. About 20 minutes later I had a quote in my email. I know we can't discuss price on the forum, but let me just say my eyes bugged out of my head! Based on what was quoted, I'm dropping the idea of getting a 712c with upgraded wood. I'm going to get a 912c without question. The only thing I have to decide is if my 912c will have a cedar top or an engleman top. I'm leaning toards cedar.

David,
How about redwood for the top????? Somewhere between cedar and englemann spruce sonically, and might be the right play since rosewood is somewhat "dark and mysterious" per Bob Womack (on the 912 for recording thread). That's what I'm thinking for my 912C at Taylorstock.

Note: Sorry for all the "edits" in this thread. This is how misinformation gets spread, and I want to cut it off right here and now. Anything other than what I have stated about the event is purely speculation. Please do not call Taylor about these TaylorStock guitars.
Sorry for the late reply, guys. David, next time try e-mailing me before you knock yourself out. :) I understand the confusion around all this. The fact is that Taylor doesn't even have a published custom shop price list today. Somone on the forum is circulating an old copy from when they did. Those prices may or may not be correct. Every custom-shop order is on a case-by-case basis, because there are simply too many variables.
I hope this will clear up any confusion. This is what I know:
The sale of the guitar will be handled 100% by the dealer of your choice. (I can make a few recommendations if you're not sure who to use.) The sales will be according to your dealer's pricing policies. If they require a deposit, likely you'll have to make the deposit. It is 100% dependent on the dealer. You do not need to contact any dealer prior to the event. As a matter of fact, I would STRONGLY recommend against it. Contacting your dealer will cause confusion at both the dealer and at Taylor.
As stupid as it sounds, there are lots of VERY good reasons why the details of this event are being kept low-key. Please, just be patient and wait until the event. All your questions will be answered. You're not under any obligations whatsoever.

Thanks J.R., for the clarification......it answers my question 100%......
No further questions. ;)

Talked to Taylor about this today and confirmed the details known thusfar. Again, I wanted to reiterate that there will be no upcharge for wood that you hand-select, or even have Bob hand-select a set of wood for you. Upcharges might only apply if you want to deviate from a standard wood grade or wood combination on the lower-end guitar models. There will be more flexibility on the higher-end guitars as far as wood combinations go. They will answer further specific questions at the event.
To me, this event is a dream come true. The opportunity to sort through Taylor's stock of wood, talk to Bob about it, and design my own guitar with wood that I choose, is an incredible once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
J.R.
[Edit for clarification: Upcharges may apply if you deviate from a standard "grade" of wood offered on a particular model. An example might be ordering AAA-grade quilted maple on the NS-62CE, when the standard offering is AA-grade flamed maple. This is done on a case-by-case basis, and you'll need to ask at the event. Please don't be afraid to ask! You might be surprised....]

I totally agree J.R
This is a once in a lfe time experience for me. I have paid top dollar for custom guitars through the years, but I have only been able to order the specifications I wanted over the phone and by E-mail and such.
I guarantee unless you are a major Player like garth brooks or other big names you would not get this opportunity from gibson or Martin.
To be able to select your own wood and virtually design your own guitar with imput from the man him self ( Bob Taylor ) is absolutely a dream come true.
It doesn't get any better than this.
