I will be co-hosting a benefit concert Fri., 9/9 at the Pick a Cup Cafe, 1813 Dempster (just e. of Dodge), in Evanston, IL from 8-10 and possibly beyond if the owner agrees to stay open later. Suggested donation $10, or whatever you can afford. All proceeds to the Red Cross' hurricane relief fund. Currently on the bill are SASS! (Susan Urban and me), Anthony Whitaker, Shelley Miller, and New Orleans singer-songwriter Kristin Van Meter (who escaped with her wallet and the clothes on her back, but not her guitar).

Great job Sandy! Feeling like you're part of the solution is one of the best feelings in the world!

We've just added: Celtic fingerstyle ace Phil Cooper (of Cooper, Nelson & Early) and wizard of the strings Tommi Zender (electric and acoustic guitars and looping stations and pedals, as well as bass). More to come!
Of course, CD sales will be donated to the cause as well.

I first got interested in guitar when I was in High School @ New Trier, and a few of us went and saw Doc Watson in the mid seventies at a small theater and it was so great to be in the small venue. I just can't remember the name of it. Any Ideas of a popular, small venue in Evanston from back then. (seeing your "evanston" subject made me ask.

All I can think of is AmazinGrace; there was also the Third Rail by the Foster St. L stop; and Hogeye Music used to hold in-store concerts (they've since moved them to the Lake St. and 1st Unitarian Churches). Dunno if Tommy Nevins' was around back then (they've discontinued music). Currently, there's PickACup, Cafe Mud, and Bill's Blues.
