Dobieboy (AGF screen name) and I met one day at Guitar Center at Springfield NJ (Route 22) and we had a little talk about guitar/Taylor stuff. We parted without exchanging phone numbers or e-mail addresses or anything. He knew I was an AGF user but didn’t know my screen name, so he created a thread so he could locate me. I saw the thread and we’ve been in contact since.

We learned each other’s interest in attending one of the AGF gatherings/get-together but when we looked at the past threads, we were wondering why some of them didn’t really materialize.

So we came up with this idea of having a get together with interested folks that live in the NJ (Tri-State vicinity), but we were thinking of creating more than just a get-together/Jam session/networking/socializing kinda’ event, but instead we were thinking of a more “productive” sort of gathering which we can tentatively call “Group learning session/Practice/Clinic.

The idea simply is based on the group coming up with a concrete plan of say, lining up songs/pieces the individual members want to learn/practice but on a group setting, where group members can teach or coach each other, and work on and hammer out selected songs/pieces together. At the outset, it may seem like a lot of things have to be considered or ironed out but the group can get a ‘brain storming” session at first where the individuals can contribute their own inputs and hopefully be able to create a workable plan going. Any interested parties?

I'm interested, but I doubt I'm a good enough player to be 'coaching' anybody else. :)

Well, one of the ideas really brewing in our minds are, let's say whatever your level is, you decide what pieces/songs you want to learn, commit to a target date of completion and the whole group or one of its members can actually help you out should you have any difficulty in any area of the piece you are trying to hammer out. In a sense the group will be helping one another to get some structure and discipline to their guitar learning/playing goals.

Let's also pretend that someone is taking lessons from a guitar teacher, the group can be his/her alternate audience for friendly critique of the work progress. So in a sense, its everyone helping everyone and of course, on the side, everyone benefits from networking, gaining new friends/acquaintances etc.

From looking at the past threads, we are guessing that there are a lot of hesitation from would-be joiners because of their concern about their level of skill and so the group doesn't see the light of day. Well, it doesn't have to be that way.

In initiating this idea, we are just trying to think "out-of-the-box", trying to come up with something different from the usual norm of a "Guitar Group" forming just for networking or getting-together sakes.
And the most important first step is really, to get a small group to meet and "brain storm" and IMPROVE more on the idea.
I think it will be fun!!!

Being from Michigan I, rather obviously, won't be a part of the group. But I hope to hear reports that would encourage me to try something similar over here.....

It would be great to have you. At this point, we'd need to establish an appropriate place and time to meet. Perhaps we could arrange a "schedule" like every 3rd Saturday or something. You're just across the Goethals from us, so we'll keep you posted.

I think, as George has stated, the idea would be to work out ideas and support each other. He and I had spoken at great length about feeling motivated to play and learn, but keeping our routines "fresh" was something that I felt was lacking in my own playing. The AGF, seems like a great place to find interested players.

Just want to chime in, I wish we had this in my local area, this is the very good constructive idea that we all should have. It's simply win/win situation.
Thanks for let all of us(the struggle wanna be guitarists of all ages) know about this. :D :)
