Hey, everyone! I need your vote and comments. We're currently trying to work out the costs of the registration, which we had planned would include transportation to/from the event. As a third of the people registered are local to San Diego or Southern California and will be providing their own transportation, and others attending will possibly be renting a car, providing transportation is shaping up to be an expensive proposition if we break the costs up to only those who will need the transportation. Even if we collect the same registration fee from everyone, with transportation we are still looking at $45-$50 per person attending the event
My target for a registration fee was $20-$25 per person attending the event, but it looks like we just can't get there given the costs of transportation.
I looked into the cost of a rental car, and it's only $135 for 4-days for a full-size car. If we just decided that it's better if everyone provide their own transportation, I'd be more than happy to give others a ride, and I'm sure many others would share as well.
Should we continue with the plan to provide transportation and roll the costs into the registration fee, even if it's $50 per person for everyone attending? Should we just make it simple by providing a map and leaving transportation up to everyone individually?
Thoughts? Comments? Please respond quickly, as I'd like to have the registration fee and process finalized within the next week, so we can begin confirming all the registrations.
Thanks!

I am going to be local...well, flying in for the event, but my Mom lives locally, so thats home for me :)
Personally, I don't think the cost of transportation should be split amongst everyone, especially given the number of locals and people renting cars. I, for one, would have no problem giving someone a lift to and from the Town and Country...and I think if everyone local offered their services (its really not much skin off our noses) we could cover just about everyone, if not everyone. Id even make 2 trips if i had to...)
We should get a count of how many people will be driving on thier own and have the space for some extra people to bring along or something...
Maybe rent a Van for the weekend...one that a member that is flying in (maybe even you, JR) would drive taking the people that cant be fit in with local members.

Perhaps if someone is renting a car they can upgrade to a van. Riders could kick in few bucks or buy lunch.

I'd be happy to help, but it would be a little tough time-wise. I'm not staying at the hotel and my commute is around 90 minutes each way just to El Cajon. Consider me a backup, as needed.

Even though I'm in SF, I checked that "I'm Local" because I'll be renting a car to drive down. I could certainly help 4 people. I checked on renting a van but the cost is almost $120/day vs about $47/day for a full size. So, I'll stay with the car.
Another poll that might be more useful would be "Of the people that will have cars at the event (or hotel), how many people can you offer rides to?". And also, "How many people that are staying at the hotel will need a ride to/from Taylor"?
I've got an idea that the transportation issue will work it's self out. I've got 25 cents that says we'll have enough cars to take care of the task. Especially if some of the locals can help out. Anyone in San Diego own a van dealership or better yet, a lemo service?
I can see the last few hairs on JR's head prepairing to hit the floor. What kind of event can we get JR to work on next?:) :)

Bless your heart, with all this planning do you ever get to sleep?
My opinion will be coming from the perspective of east-coast females traveling alone on the west-coast.
I have no plans of renting a car to drive around San Diego and I don't want to have to do that if there is any way to avoid it.
That is an expense that I wasn't counting on as if insignificant as that may seem.
I am not averse to riding with others but that seems like it could get a little confusing, how would we know who is riding with whom? Please tell me that Cynbrad and I won't be out thumbing for a ride to the Taylor Factory, I don't think the hubby would go for it. :D
If we did what rsimper suggested and see how many would need rides then get a van? I don't know, I'm sure this will work out though.
I'm open to whatever as long as I'm not driving. :)

I think Bob is right... The last of my hair just fell out. hehe
I'm willing to try to work this out any way that we can. Renting vans would get expensive, I agree. And I don't want to make it confusing for anyone going to the event. If we decide to NOT go with the bus to/from the event, we should organize a car pool so that there is no confusion and nobody is left out. Heck, I might need to hitch a ride with someone if my wife wants to take the car and go off and do her own thing... :) Or we might rent two cars, which would give us the ability to take 6-8 people to/from the event.
We'll get this figured out, somehow. I promise. Don't change your plans. This isn't a show stopper.

I'd be happy to co-rent as long as I'm not co-driving. ;)

I think we'll have plenty of room with all the cars that are going to be there. We don't need the extra cost of renting a bus. Besides, I can't afford a registration fee over the $20-25 you were thinking of JR....I'm broke. :(
I just have one things to say:
SHOTGUN!!!!!!

I personally feel stranded if and when I don't have transportation at my command. I'll be in the 'rent-a-wreck' group.
(If I could justify the time away from home, heck, I'd leave a week or so early and see the country .....and lot's of it.....along the way.)

I have a GMC Sonoma pick-up, and I'll have a guest with me. My wife, on the other hand, has a Chrysler somethin'-or-other mini-van.
The possibility exists that she and I could trade vehicles for this event. However, her van is a company car. If she has to work, she wins.
Still, if I get the van (seats a driver and perhaps six passengers) I'd be happy to drive to the T&C, to Taylor, to dinner, etc., if it helps...

Planning on renting a car. Should have room for a couple folks to help lighten the load, if needed...

Just for reference: I'm not sure about San Diego, but here in Orange County you can rent something like a Dodge Neon or Chevy Cavalier for about $30 a day from Enterprise and Avis.

I'm not exactly local(6 hours away) but I will be driving. I'll only be bringing one other person but I'll be in my car(my '69 Mach 1) since it's my daily driver and is the most comfortable on long trips. It is essentially a two seater(fold down rear seat) but I WILL have room to cart people's guitars to/from events where we'd need them. I can probably fit 6-8 back there, if not more. That might make it easier for those that will be squeezing people into the rent-a-cars that might not have a lot of trunk space.
However I can help..........

I am renting a car for me and my son and would have room for 2 or 3 others. Also we are arriving in San Diego (American Airlines) at 12:00 noon on Aug 8 if there are others not renting who need a ride from the airport to hotel around that time.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Out of the eight people who said that they would like transportation provided, I've only heard from two of you. It looks like the majority is either local or is planning or would prefer to rent a car. I haven't settled on a decision yet, so I really want to hear from those who would like transportation provided. Please post here or e-mail me.
Thanks.
