View Full Version : Very Laid Back FL Gathering
Just like the name implies, we are (semi) planning a gathering in the Jacksonville or St Augustine area for the weekend of January 22.
fitness1 is coming down from the frigid north to play golf, Unk is planning to meet up with us and whoever else wants to is most welcome...the more the merrier.
We may end up in St Augustine or we may just find a place to hang out and jam. Whatever we end up doing this will be very informal and a "whatever happens" kind of gathering. I'm sure it will be fun though even if it is only us three.
Anybody else close enough to attend and not need a full-blown event to justify the travel?
Darn! We are going to be in Palm Coast the weekend before! We always spend some time in St. Augustine. We'll try and catch Elizabeth Roth if she is playing locally.
Man, so close but so far away, eh? I am sorry the weekends don't line up!

Hey. I might be in. I also might have homework, but surely I might have a little free time.
My schedule of gigs for the weekend is:
Friday 5-8 at Casablanca Inn Bed Breakfast (for guests only, but please do come and stay, an awesome place right on the bayfront)
Saturday 1- 4 at Tradewinds, a favorite local spot in downtown St Aug
Saturday night 6-9 at Golden Lion Cafe in Flagler Beach, (On the beach, about 40 miles south of st aug) :
Hope to see you guys, or if you don't make it to a gig, maybe I can hang out on Sunday for a bit!

And Mark, the weekend before that, I am only playing at the Casablanca Inn on Friday and at Tradewinds on Saturday.
Really, the Inn is amazing, but it is for guests only. Still, when people walk by and just want to sit down for a moment, they don't get uptight or try to run you off. But they don't have any refreshments for you either. So if you are walking around town, do stop by and say hi. And Tradewinds is, as you know, a place for anyone to go...
I am just not working as much with being full time in school, and with teaching two nights a week at the Blind School. Maybe next summer, my schedule on the website will look more full like it usually did before crazy this year...

Lisa, that weekend looks good for me at this point. Shouldn't be a problem so count me in. Let me know where and when.
I'm in New Smyrna so it won't be that much of a drive for me.
Hope you won't run me off if I show up without a Taylor.
How about a Goodall or Collings?

Dang it! I'll just miss it. I'll be in FL that weekend, but I'll be busy until mid-week. I'm hoping to get together with Tom (tbondo) and Vicki that Tuesday (the 25th).
Y'all have fun! :)
...Hope you won't run me off if I show up without a Taylor.
How about a Goodall or Collings?Heavens, no. Please come even if you bring a bad Sears Hummingbird copy. :D
As for details, belljs, stay tuned! As it gets closer we'll firm things up! I see that day is your birthday, hope that won't mess things up. :)
JT...if you somehow get un-busy please look us up. :D
Shucks Jim, I was hoping to get to see do that 3 capo thing. ;)
It sounds like it will be fun. I love meeting new people, and some of you are practically neighbors.

We lived in St. Augustine from '84-'86. My best friend, other than my wife lives there. We're going down in May. Have fun at the January gathering.
I'd like some feedback as to what is most important to those planning to come.
Jamming together
Hanging out, dinner and getting acquainted
Attending a gig together
I'm thinking we need to choose one and then if the others are doable that will just be icing on the cake. :)

Combine #1 and #2 and that should keep everyone happy.
We can always go to a gig, but how often would the Sunshine Boys and Girls have a chance to get together, hang out an pick?
BTW, Lisa you and Liz have to sing.

Wow, this sounds like fun. I wonder if I can make it ....
Hanging out, having dinner, and getting acquainted is #1 for me. It might not be too difficult to throw in attending a gig. Playing would be fun as well but unless we have a indoor place to meet I'm not sure how that would go. As you know Florida weather is up & down, 70's one day, 40's the next so gathering outside to play would be iffy.

I will be up for about anything in the afternoon/evening of the weekend days.....I won't be traveling with an instrument, but would be happy to play Ricks Goody (LOL) It would be cool to see Elizabeth, hell I might get a fancy to sing with her!
I think at this point we can start to plan a dinner in Jacksonville. I'll come up with some ideas for eats and maybe we can even try to get a small space to jam in.
Input is welcome :)

I'm fairly new here, but it would be nice to meet some folks. I live in Jax, hang out somewhat in St. Augustine, so either would be cool. As long as the Navy doesn't send me out of town. ;)
We'd love to have you Artie!

It would be cool. A shame to miss you if you are all so close, too.
As I said, I have a gig Saturday night in Flagler beach, so the dinner in Jax that night would be out, and driving to Jax after I get done playing in St Aug at 8 Friday night is also not too practical. Maybe Sunday I could hang, although no doubt I'll have homework right away, so I may have stuff I need to do.
You all are welcome to stop in to see me at Tradewinds during the day Saturday (1:00-4:00). Too bad I have to cruise to Flagler Beach right after...
Anyway, if I can make it I'd like to, I'll keep checking on what you guys plan.
Okay Gang, plans are coming together here. Woo hoo!
I have found a facility for us to meet in on Saturday from 11AM to 5PM. Then, we can plan on leaving that place and going out to dinner together to cap off the evening. It is conveniently located near I 95 and Southside Blvd so it is easily accessible to any part of the city.
Unfortunately it looks like we have a time conflict with Elizabeth's gig and our jam session, so perhaps we could include her gig on our next gathering just as we have on the previous ones.
If this location turns out to be a good one, we can start planning the "official" gathering for spring and all our long distance friends can come down!

Oh well. We will see you guys next time around!
Of course, if anyone coming into town wants to stay at Casablanca Inn on Friday night, they probably still have a room. It's a Bed and Breakfast and it is always voted best in St Aug. Right on the Bayfront so it's a really REALLY cool place, but may be out of price range for some. (I know I don't often spring for a B and B) BUT I'm playing on the veranda 5-8 p.m. on Friday, for info: (904) 829-0928
Have fun you guys!
Oh yeah, and I always assume people know what my act is about. But most people don't so I should post my web address once in a while:

If this location turns out to be a good one, we can start planning the "official" gathering for spring and all our long distance friends can come down! I'll be counting the days! I sure hope it can be at the end of April or the beginning of May (maybe 2nd or 3rd week). Then I can kill two birds with one stone. I'm waiting for my puppy to be born and it should be available at the end of April and the breeder is located in Orlando. I could drive down and go to the gathering and then pick up my puppy. :D

Yup. A week or so ago, I discovered this forum, which led me to this post, which led me to your website. I was looking at your calender, and I couldn't believe how many times you've performed at the Milltop Tavern - me and my wifes favorite hang out - and we've never heard of you. (A situation that we will soon rectify.)
Sometimes, it isn't such a small world. ;)
Any chance that you'll find time to update your calender for the coming months? Or, do you know when you'll be at the Milltop next? Thanks.

Yes, Artie - I am going to try to update my calendar tonight or tomorrow a.m., so check back tomorrow night. Ok? I'll do it, I promise!
In the past I have always played a lot more gigs and always kept the site up to date. I have been a bit of a slacker lately (well, not slacking, but not updating) because I have been mostly playing just the two gigs per week (Tradewinds on Saturdays, Casablanca Inn on Fridays) and I have been teaching music two nights a week and attending college full time. So you could say I have been a bit busy. No excuse, though - because I have had a few people email me and say, "hey, update your website already!"...
And Milltop - great place! I am not scheduled there right now. In fact, I was just about to email Don Oja-Dunaway and say "hi" and tell him I would like to play there this spring sometime. I'm really too busy to take on any more work until the semester is over. (In fact, I think I told him that and that's probably why he hasn't called in a while.) I never really have been on the regular rotation there, sort of a fifteen year fill in. Anytime Don ever offered me a regular weekday spot, I had 5 or so gigs per week at other places and couldn't take it on. The money isn't the greatest at Milltop, either. That's not the point though, the best players in town play there because they all just love it so much and it is a listening crowd. Weekend and evening acts, (duos and bands) make more dough. But for a solo like me, weekday afternoon pay isn't great. Weekend spots are pretty good, but if you play the patio they cancell you if it rains. So it's an iffy gig. Isn't that funny? You hear a lot of great stuff there. Eclectic stuff. Original stuff. The coolest listening room in town, but for people like me who don't mind throwing some popular covers and doing requests .. the better money is sometimes elsewhere...
You know the kind of people who play there. Like Sam P. right? Incredible, awesome player. He doesn't get paid any attention to in a crowded "bar" atmosphere... I'll bet he loves the Milltop though.
Anyway, hope to see you sometime in St Aug.
Have you heard of the Listening Post Cafe? It is a new spot in Jax, I got an email from the owners, they have dinner and lunch entetainment. I think it is all oroginal folk singer songwriter stuff. If you like that you should check it out. (I haven't been there yet so I don't know where it is, check the phone book. ) ;)
Bye!
