hey all, it's been a while since we've organized something together, so i figured i'd throw a message out here to see who all might be interested. a while back, i had mentioned that i'd be willing to host a get-together at my apartment, as i've got a large (and stable!! ;)) back deck, grill, easy street parking, cool neighbors, etc. we'd basically just have to hope for good weather, but in july/august, it shouldn't be too hard to find a nice day.

here are some days i'd be able to host something -- let me know if you're interested!!

sunday, july 25th
saturday, august 14th
saturday, august 21st
sunday, august 22nd

the only thing that would be required is that you bring something to sit on....i've got a few bar stools which are fun for playing guitars on, but i probably wouldn't have enough to accommodate everyone. also, just helping pitch in toward the food/beverages would be cool too.

anyway, let's hear it for date preferences so we can try to throw together some preliminary plans....

(FYI, i live on the north side of the city @ approximately foster/clark -- about 5 blocks from the berwyn red line if anyone would prefer to take the train)

GO CUBBIES!!!! :)

7/25 sounds best for me--I'm out of town the other days.

Foster & Clark? My old stomping grounds--I lived in Andersonville for 7 yrs before buying a house one 'hood to the north (Edgewater--midway between Thorndale & Granville red line stops). Small world!

you know I'll be there.....

I'll check my calendar at work to be sure....but at first glance, I don't have a problem with any of those days.

so cool, we have some interest....

i'm pretty much fine for whatever time is clever for the rest of yall. saturdays might even be best for those who might be coming in from out of town (ie. james and maybe some folks from further south in illinois?), and since some people might have church stuff to do on sundays.

what's everyone think about saturday, august 14th?? lemme know!! the sooner we get some responses, the sooner we can start putting together a solid game plan!!

:)

August 14 might work for me. Being retired now, I can do a little more travelling when I want to. My youngest son lives in Chicago and I have yet to get up and visit. Might be a nice combination trip.

Where in Chicago are you thinking?

Oops, just reread the first post for the location. I actually think my son might live reasonably close.

By the way, will you guys let a diehard Cardinal fan in on the gathering?

MJH - depends on the division standings when the event takes place :)

I'd prefer a different date than the 14th,...any of the other 3 would work better for me, personally.

I'm still good for any of those dates....
the 25th would be less favorable.....but I could probably still swing it.

August 14 works pretty well for me. I sold my 615 (actually traded for a Martin D-28) but I still have a 355 that should get me into the door. I suppose I should change my sig line, but I post so rarely anymore.

Hey Folks -- I just realized that I'm going to be on call for the 8/21 and 22 weekend, so it would work out best if we do Saturday, August 14th.

Last time when Adam hosted the get together at his office, we threw together a song list ahead of time so that we all knew a few of the same tunes. That worked out pretty well, so if anyone has suggestions on songs they'd like the group to learn, please send me suggestions, either via this thread, or you can email them to me at don@tikcuf.com

The song list from last time was:

Beatles - I've Just Seen a Face
Ben Harper - Burn One Down
Bob Dylan - I Shall Be Released
Chris Isaak - Graduation Day
Coldplay - Green Eyes
Crosby Stills Nash - Wasted on the Way
Dave Matthews - Gravedigger
Goo Goo Dolls - Sympathy
Grateful Dead - Friend of the Devil
Grateful Dead - Jack A Roe
Grateful Dead - Monkey and the Engineer
John Hiatt - Icy Blue Heart
John Prine - Angel from Montgomery
Little Feat - Willin
Neil Young - Down By the River
Pearl Jam - Last Kiss (they didn't write it, but we did it in the "style" of PJ's cover
Pure Prairie League - Amie (such a fun song, I vote we definitely play this one again!)
Steve Earle - Someday
The Band - The Weight
U2 - One
Van Morrison - Moondance

Other than that, I figure we'll start around 1:00pm at my place, and everyone's welcome for as long as we feel like hanging out. I'll probably fire up the grill early in the event, as it'll be in the afternoon and I figure people might start getting hungry.

For food, I'll probably do hamburgers, turkeyburgers, and a variety of grilled vegetables. I'll also have some beer and soda in the cooler (please bring your own wine and/or hard liquor if that's what you prefer). If anyone's vegetarian or has any other special requests, please let me know.

Now -- I need RSVPs so I can plan for how much food to get. Please shoot me an email at don@tikcuf.com to let me know either if you're Definitely going to come, or if you're Thinking about it.

Any questions, lemme know. I'll send out my phone numbers and address, etc., privately via email.

Cheers!!
-Don

we could play this :ha:

Artist/Band: Keith, Toby
Song: Weed With Willie
C F C
I always heard that his herb was top shelf
C D G
I just could not wait to find out for myself
C F C
Don't knock it til' you tried it, Well I tried it my friend
C G C
And I'll never smoke weed with Willie again

I learned a hard lesson in a small Texas town
He fired up a fat boy and passed him around
The last words that I spoke before they tucked me in
Was I'll never smoke weed with Willie again

(Chorus: )
F Bb F
I'll never smoke weed with Willie again
C D G
My parties all over before it begins
C F C
You can pour me some old whiskey river my friend
C G C
But I'll never smoke weed with Willie again

I hopped on his old bus, the Honey Suckle Rose
The party was Vegas it was after the show.
Alone in the front lounge with just me and him,
With one parting puff grim creeper set in.

(Chorus)

D G D
Now we're passing the guitar and telling good jokes
D E7 A7
I know ones a-comin' cause I'm smelling smoke
D G D
No I do not partake, I just let it pass by
D A7 D
With a smile on my face and a great contact high

(Chorus)

In the fetal position with drool on my chin
I messed up and smoked weed with Willie again

I'll be there. No special dietary restrictions you haven't already addressed, Don (grilled dead animals and veggies are the mainstays of my diet these days). I may bring some of my own songs in case anyone wants to try them out (or drop some tasty leads in over my more rudimentary rhythm). I'm not a Toby Keith fan, but I hope that doesn't disqualify me from attending.

And how about some of these:
Diamonds and Rust--Joan Baez
Helplessly Hoping--CSN
Wish You Were Here--Pink Floyd
Lola--Kinks
Pinball Wizard, Squeeze Box, Won't Get Fooled Again--the Who
No Surrender, Rosalita--Springsteen
Lincoln Park Pirates, City of New Orleans, The Dutchman--Steve Goodman (okay, so the last one was written by Michael Smith)
The Weight, Cripple Creek, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down--The Band
Driver 8--REM

I could also bring the dulcimer(s) for a change of pace--I do
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes on dulcimer (in D, but I can tune it as high as F if need be).

I just noticed this August 14th date... since I was unable to attend the first two times you all got together, I'd really like to make this one. (Once again) I'll need to rearrange the schedule a bit... but if it can be done, I'm hoping to make it!

I'm really pissed at myself....
I had to uninstall Microsoft Outlook a couple of weeks ago...and I just realized that ALL of the email addresses for Chicago-area AGFers was in that....

CRAP!

I was going to email it to you, Don....but I guess not....sorry.

I'd go but most of you are "old people". J/K but that's a drive for me and I'm probably too young anyways.
