I had a Heritage 575 that I loved. Financial woes caused me to have to sell it. I'd love to get another one someday.

I preferred it to the Gibson 175 I used to have.

I think so. It’s all I use for Jazz, other than a little nylon once in a while. I use a Taylor 712 for solo fingerstyle jazz, which is pretty much all I do for gigs and recording. Lately I’m using a LKSM6 for pickstyle, of which I really don’t in any professional capacity, though sure have fun around the house. Using a steelstring isn’t most people's idea of classic jazz guitar tone. But I feel, particularly in a solo setting, it’s piano like frequency range, resonance, and sustain are perfect. When playing live I use a Rare Earth humbucker that I think kinda puts a tiny bit of the classical jazz tone back in. For recording I just mic it. So yeah, I do thing Taylors make good jazz guitar.

Livingston's list includes some of the finest examples of jazz boxes around. In my younger days when I took myself and my music more seriously I used a Benedetto for my jazz gigs. Today, I actually use a Taylor 414 with a Rare Earth humbucker or a Rickenbacker 360 with flat wounds for jazz work. I think any guitar will do if you have the chops to make it happen. Alot of jazz players today use a hybrid like a 335 with flats due to it's ability to create so many different tones. In addition, don't discount the many inexpensive jazz boxes being sold. With a good set up and minor adjustments some are real players. Good luck in your quest!

Joe Pass recorded at least one album using a beat up stratocaster that belonged to the drug rehab center where he received treatment. Mundell Lowe once used my (yes, my very own) old Ibanez ES175 copy (famous lawsuit model) to do a gig in San Jose. I swore that guitar was a piece of junk until it was in his hands.

Nonetheless, it's fun to play and look at those beautiful high end guitars.

I purchased my ES-137 Custom because of it's versatility. Between the '57 Classic humbuckers and varitone 6 position switch I can cover a lot of ground, It was also reasonably priced.

If you like the Gibson type of jazz guitar, and money is a big factor in your decision, you might check out the Epiphone Elitist series. They are not your old typical Epiphones. They have a Broadway and a Byrdland model that you might consdier. Best of luck in finding the one you really want.

I had an Ibanez Byrdland copy that I let a guy talk me into selling to him. I charged him double what I paid. In retrospect, he got a bargain!

Yeah, I hear you. I did end up selling that law suit 175 for double what I paid for it, too. Sure wish I had it, especially knowing that the great Mundell Lowe once played it. Oh well, no one famous ever played my 912C but of all the guitars I've ever owned, that's the one that has meant the most.

Cheers.

Like Taylors aren't sky high?

I use a Gretsch G3155 Streamliner for my jazz guitar stuff but amazingly I use my Les Paul the most. It is such a versatile guitar. My teacher plays a Gison L4 and Gibson L5....only thing I can say about the tone of those guitars....WOW.

On the cheaper side of things, SEBRING makes a really nice full hollow body that just sound amazing w/ flatwound strings on it.

For a lower budget jazz guitar, you may want to try out a G&L (http://www.glguitars.com/frameset.htm) semi-hollow Bluesboy....

While its not a pure jazz guitar, I heard they can produce some really sweet jazz tones.
