Just curious... I feel like I'm in a bit of a slump here... I play fingerstyle/flatpicking stuff, and I need something new to play. Can anyone recommend "the song" I should learn? I'd like to learn some nice instrumental fingerstyle pieces, but I need some suggestions... anyone?

Go get you a book of Sonatinas....or Bach...or Mozard....they sound awesome on guitar.

Any of those classical piano books...then flare em up to suit your taste.

Are you familiar with Leo Kottke?? If you want to try some of his stuff, I suggest going here!

Pick up Al Petteway's "Celtic Blues and Beyond" book/cd. This book has given me several new songs that are fun to play, nicely laid out and none are over my head. I wanted to learn some DADGAD stuff which is why I bought it, but more than just DADGAD, I have picked up at least 5-6 great songs out of there that are always a hit.

Landslide, Dust in the Wind. Also, just google "Travis Picking" and try a few different things with those types of patterns. This sort of launched me into fingerstyle playing a few weeks ago. Finally, just make up your own stuff, too. In fact, that's probably the best thing you can do in my experience. Good luck. Hope this wasn't too elementary or off-topic.

I agree with this. Sometimes I create stuff that's so difficult for me to play that by the time I've learned to execute it cleanly, it noticeably improves my playing overall.

How about learning some Hawaiian Slack Key (http://www.accentonmusic.com/book_detail.asp?qID=26) also Ozzie Kotani's beginning Slack Key book (http://www.ozziekotani.com/instruction.html).

My guitar playing life has been energized and enhanced recently by discovering Doug Young's lovely DADGAD arrangement of Shenandoa, and his equally wonderful DGDGAD arrangement of the Christmas song "Bring a Torch". The former is not that hard to play but is simply beautiful. The latter is taking me more time to learn, but I'll get there.

Do a search on YouTube and you can see and hear him playing both of these, and he has been very nice and put up tablature for both of these on his web site.

Larry Pattis has a great DADGAD arrangement of Walzing Matilda that I plan to learn, and another AGF member has posted a transcription of this (do a search here for the tablature).

Both Doug Young and Larry Pattis hang out here on the forum.

Also, do you know of this amazing web site?.....

or

There are enough guitar arrangements on these pages to keep me busy for several lifetimes!
