View Full Version : So Cal TGF Get together - November 1

Let’s all get together on November 1st and make music, eat large amounts of food and get to know each other. I have a great outdoor location that is large enough to handle all of us. We can visit with everyone and have different groups so that we can play all styles of music. That’s right – If you don’t want to hear Ryan (rsimper) play Dan Mathews (or whoever) or me play America (Muskrat Love), or Steve Parr play all the worship songs know to mankind, you can just grab your guitar and go to another nearby group. This place is large and located in the mountains. It is somewhat centrally located between LA and San Diego. There are several of us that will be camping Friday night, so come on up anytime on Saturday. Stay for the night campfire and have some smores and brown bears. It will be a great time.
The location is Hurkey Creek. It is located east of Hemet on Highway 74. From I15, take the 74 east about 40 miles just past mountain center. If you get to lake Hemet, you’ve gone about 2 miles too far. Ask the Ranger for the guitar guys, pay him $2 and you’ll have a great day.

I've got every album, 150 bootleg CDs, and I've learned to play every song up to Everyday...
YOU may hate me...
Then again, we might end up loving each other...
Either way, you can be certain I'll break out at least 30 different DMB songs by weekend's end

Ryan...I'll try to do a little better than 3-4 chords...hehehe...
We will have a great Jam session!!...November 1st....life will be good...no doubt!!....
I hope a brew or two is allowed...
I would like to play or listen at all of the TGF groups attending...
Everyone from TGF should plan to be there...:)

The Big Baby rides in the gig bag on the hog...(and stays in tune!)...however, I will really miss the 814cES...I have to make a decision...it depends on how much gear I bring...tent, food, beer,ect......yes...the hog will win...we will have a great camp-out...I may have to learn some Worship tunes also?...hehehe..OK...
too bad Alberto can't join us so I can see that RED guitar...we'll, good night...a nice MC run to Palm Springs tomorrow...a good time but no guitar for that trip....See you in a couple weeks...

I may have to learn some Worship tunes also?...hehehe..OK... I've heard that this can be a problem and that some people worry about this. I play on the worship team for my church and it would be fun do play some worship songs. But if we do very many, it would be a drag for those that aren't believers. Those from the TGF that have played guitar with me know that I don't play worship songs at TGF outings. But I would if it where appropriate. This is a big place.
May I suggest that we have a separate (but equal) section that is set up for worship songs? That way those that want to do that can, and those that don't......
Is this a good idea?

SteveS...
My 814cES is Sitka/Rosewood...
Regarding the worship tunes...Actually, I was indicating that I would learn some if it was part of the songlist...my primary playing interest is stuff like DMB, ect...One big group, multiple groups, or time slots for various groups, whatever you decide since your the organizer of this event. I'm sure everything will fall into place when we get there and see what people want to do...A good time will be had by all...
The ride today to Palm Springs was fun. Too bad we went by way of the I-10...
I didn't plan the route this time...but when I do that Ortega 74 is one of my favorites...

Ryan, I thought I would start learning some of the DMB songs in your favorites list...I have the DMB tab book for LLC...but it doesn't have any of them in it...maybe I can find them online somewhere today...

Just some random thoughts --
What if we each bring a tab/chord chart or two of out favorite songs with several copies. Then we could teach those songs and everyone could learn/play along and take something home to work on?
We could list songs that we want to learn and have someone sign up to bring that song Ryan could bring some Dane Mathew, Gardner could bring some Kotke, I could bring some umm... I'll think of something.
Would you want songs or some fingerstyle pices or.....
Ask and you shall receive.

Gardner-
The best site I've found is www.dmbtabs.com It has fairly accurate transcriptions of most of the songs...
Seriously, I can play all of them so if you want to pick a few that YOU want to play, I'd be a happy camper (literally!)
Steve- that sounds like a good plan...
Everyone should get started on #41 by DAVE MatthewS
The BASIC version is:
Intro-
Am-Bm-Em-D
Verse-
Am-Bm-Em-D
Chorus
G-D/F#-C-C
Jam/Outro
Am-Bm-Em-D
Pretty simple in chord format, though DM plays it quite differently :)
The key with DM is that you MUST know how the songs actually sound because the melodies are not standard and the changes arent consistent.

Leo Kottke?....I used to have a couple of his cd's but I can't find them now...his style would also be a real challenge...He's damm good on the twelve string...I used to have a Yamaha 12'er...
I've been working on the tabs to Crash into Me, Satellite, and Ants Marching...I can't wait to hear Ryans renditions of DM...

Isn't Little Wing a worship song? :)
I hope to make the trip out early Sat morning but I would have to leave by about 1 pm. For those of you good with distances, is it worth the drive from OC for only 3-4 hours of get together time?

VFran...from Dana Point you can take the Ortega Hwy 74...I believe that goes all the way to the Hurkey Creek event...I'm also in Dana Point. I think the drive would be very nice and worth the trip alone...
(I haven't looked at the map yet...anyone else confirm this is the best route from Dana Point?)

thanks gardner....the last time I took the the 74 was a day trip to Temecula and it seemed like the longest drive of my life. I wonder if it would be quicker to take the 91 east to the 215?
Ryan- I've only been out of the harbor once and it was a little too choppy for me but I bet you had a great time.
General question: How early do you think you will all start on Saturday??

Whenever we wake up :p
Actually, who knows- I dont even know the plan, and what the deal is for Friday if anyone is going...
I'd imagine that people would want to get underway by around the 10am range to drive out and get started by noon?

By 10am, half my day is gone.:p I guess the early bird didn't play guitar.
Since I need to leave by 1 or so, it may not work out for me to come out that late.:(

I won't be getting out there until Saturday morning, and I haven't made the decision on whether or not to camp Saturday night. I should be there, nonetheless, during the day on Saturday, though...

I was telling my wife about the get together at Hurkey Creek, and she was asking how many other wives/girlfriends were going to be in attendance. She's not really into the whole "guitar" aspect of the gathering, and would probably be a bit bored if all she had to do was sit and listen to everyone else talk about guitars.
She loves meeting new people, and would like to go, provided their will be some other "guitar widows" in attendance...
